    Witton and District Allotments Limited

I still have a couple of my grandmother's shares too. She had cousins who lived in George Road and worked at Kynoch, who had allotment's and won gold medals in the 30's for their vegetables.

    Miniature & narrow gauge railways

Statfold Country Park was featured in a "Bargain Hunt" programme that I watched last week. 3 miles of track and it certainly did look well worth a visit.

Newsreader Kay Alexander - memories of Midlands Today

I watched that last night on the Midlands news. It must have been difficult to condense 60 years of programming into only a few minutes and they made a valiant attempt, albeit a few more news items would have been nice. I was surprised to hear that the BBC are to move out of the Mailbox and...

    Aston Hall

I looked back and found some previous pictures and information about this "glasshouse" (1858 - 1924?) - on the earlier pages 3 (post #80), 7 (#182, #201) & 8 (#234 #239), as well as some other informative posts on this, on and around those pages. Hope that helps clarify a couple of points.

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

Now sold by Nestle using the Quality Street brand name that they bought in 1988. It seems that all the chocolate is either manufactured or owned by a company outside the UK now.

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

That was true luxury and beyond my budget back then, they will be back on the shelves for Christmas though and they are a tasty little treat. :)

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

I was very sophisticated back then too, I enjoyed one of these at the Palace cinema on most Saturday's....I can still taste that plastic!

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

I remember the Music Box well. I bought Space Oddity and Purple Haze from it in the late 60s. I remember Tesco's on the High Street at the same time too. We used to call their jeans Tesco Tearaways... ;)

Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

I had another one too, mentioning the council this time, but not which one. From a slightly different number this time, which is now also blocked.

    Barton's Arms High Street Aston

It gets very busy on match days, so I guess the new taps will speed up the service and maximise takings, to help keep the pub going. Not so sure about having too many away fans in though. As has been said, the taps are not the issue. Keeping it open and retaining what makes it so important is.

    Paradise Development 2022

I think this is going to be a lot different to those tower blocks. They will be occupied by people who can afford sky high rents to go with the sky high altitude. They will be less likely to be prone to the feelings of isolation, that people who were moved from areas in which they knew everyone...

    Paradise Development 2022

Fair play to anyone that is going to live in those upper floors (I couldn't even go near those windows to look out of them, myself). I certainly wouldn't have gone up in that outside lift, let alone got out of it! :scream:

Bread Strike Of 1974 and 1978

I guess it was more noticeable to me, with the bakery shop just a couple of shops up from us Lyn.

Bread Strike Of 1974 and 1978

I remember the local bakery shop on the corner of Slade Road and Fentham Road was kept very busy. All the "regular's" bread was kept behind the counter with their names on it and Mr Salmon baked extra loaves to try to satisfy local shoppers who faced going without their "Mother's Pride".

    Aston Villa history

Yes Lyn, I was at the semi finals and the final myself. It will be emotional at Villa Park on Saturday and I know a few tears will be in the eyes of the crowd when we pay our respects to Gary.

    Aston Villa history

We lost the first of our 1982 European Cup winning team yesterday, the day before Aston Villa play again in Europe with that same trophy as the prize for the eventual winning team. Gary Shaw was a local lad from Kingshurst. He scored 79 goals in his 213 games for Villa. Gary was a big part of...

    Birmingham on Sea

My grandfather was like Bert gassed and always had a weak chest following that. He was sent back to Blighty for hospital treatment, before returning to battle and seeing out the war. They were indeed a splendid generation and they went through so much. Nice to think that 30 years on they were...
