    Wauman, Thomas and Minnie

I'm trying to solve a mystery - some medals were discovered by my relative hidden at 27 Daniels Road, Bordesley Green. They were awarded to a George Horton for service in the Boer War and WW1, but strangely, he lived at 32, not 27. A couple called Thomas and Minnie Wauman lived at 27. I think...

    George Horton of Bordesley Green

Ah ok. Thanks. Horton is fairly common but Wauman is not. I'd love to get some idea if the medals were given to Minnie Wauman. I can't see her husband in any service records though.

    Smith's Coaches Stratford Road

I believe my grandfather Sydney Tibbatts was an upholsterer for Smiths, before he became the proprieter of a cafe in Hockley and then a betting shop. Does anyone know anything about the fitting-out workshop? The man in the centre of the photo above, with the stylish round glasses, does look like...

I've looked at the tree but sorry i still don't understand: I thought George's mother's name was Clara? Sarah Gibson née Terry: you said she was your 'great grandfather's wife'. By that did you mean your great grandmother, or an earlier / second wife?

Sorry I dont understand. I haven't got a subscription to Ancestry so i can't see any of the trees.

    George Horton of Bordesley Green

I'm in London, I come to Birmingham about 4 times a year, I'll see if I can fit it in next time. I wonder if there are other records I could look at such as the fire watch? My gut feeling is that there is something inherent to the medals / service that was the reason for giving them, otherwise...

I think it very likely that the medals were a gift to Minnie, hidden and forgotten at her death. It's much more likely that a widow living alone would hide medals, than a family. Is she on Ancestry? Did she and Thomas have any children?

    George Horton of Bordesley Green

My relatives the Bennetts bought 27 some time in the 60s i think. There was definitely another family there before them who had a disabled adult son, but weren't called Horton, or they'd have given the medals back as soon as they found them. 32 isn't opposite 27, it's a bit up the road, so even...

    George Horton of Bordesley Green

I'm thinking I will keep the medals, with a view to selling them to a collector in the future. I don't feel able to give them to a distant relative who probably isn't interested. I'll make sure whoever has them has a summary of what you've all found out, for which I thank you so much. George...

    Café in Icknield Street, Hockley

My grandparents Sydney and Irene Tibbatts ran a cafe with a dining room upstairs in Icknield Street, Hockley in the 1960s. Does anyone have any info, memories, photos?

Can anyone remember what the original question was on this thread? Asking because I'm a Tibbatts.
