    B'ham's WW1 Presentation Tank

After the end of the WW1 many city's and towns nationwide were presented with Tanks and they were placed in open spaces. I am led to believe that Birmingham was presented with a tank and it was put somewhere by the Old Square. I have been told that it stayed there until some time in the 1930's...

    Samuel Edward Green, b1895 Dudley

Janette As you say, he enlisted, on 20 August, 1914. His Medal Index Card gives the date 20 May, 1915, Theatre of War, France. That date is the day he left the UK to be posted to serve as a 'Gunner' in a Battery of a Field Artillery Brigade. Thus between 20/8/14 to 20/5/15, he was in the UK...

Hi Margaret As you know he died of wounds and is buried in Grovetown Cemetery, Meaulte. Which is a village that was behind our lines, near the Town of Albert. It was also the home of Casualty Clearing Stations and one was known as 'Grove Town' by the troops, hence the name of the cemetery, as...

    War Service Record

Hi Neville Each Birmingham Battalion started their numbering from the Service Number '1'. See Lance Cpl W J Hundy below: https://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=284504 A four figure service number was quite common during WW1. In 1917 all the Territorials re-numbered...

KRRC - Anthony Rogers Reg. No. 10558

The 4th Bn KRRC landed at Le Havre, France, in December 1914. It may be that battalion that he served in. Terry

Thomas Rogers, Rifleman, KRR Corps. Reg No.1878 7th Battalion

The second battle should be the Aisne. The opening battles of WW1 are well documented and you should have no trouble finding info if you 'Google' them. No doubt his discharge under Kings Regulations are due to his wounds and making him unfit for further service. Terry

    Royal Warwickshire 10th Regiment

Hi Laine His name and number was in the casualty lists, as being wounded, published in the Birmingham Daily Post on 9 November, 1917. However, is name was written as H Fantham 20230. The actual date of wounding would have been a week or so prior to the publication date. I will try and...

    Gallant Conduct Award

Here is a link to explain about the 1914 Star: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1914_Star The 21st Brigade RFA was a Regular Army brigade in 1906. It may not have been the one he went to war with. If he joined in 1906, he could have been back in civilian life by 1914 on the Reserve list and...

    Gallant Conduct Award

Had a look at his medal card. He went overseas on 11 September 1914. He qualified for three medals. The 1914 Star, the Victory and the War Medal. These were known as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. It was quite common for men to get a conduct award. On his medal card it states that he was entered...
