Hi Peter A 'Service' Battalion was a Kitchener's New Army battalion raised for the duration of the war. Thus a regiment would have it's pre war Regular and Reserve battalions plus the Territorial Force battalions and then the 'Service' battalions which were raised in 1914-15. I still have a...

Hi Peter Got the following from the WW1 site 'The Long Long Trail' . Having checked his Medal Index Card. It states that the theatre of war was 2B Balkans, which should be 2A. 2B was Gallipoli. 7th (Service) Battalion Formed at Lichfield in August 1914 as part of K1 and became part of 33rd...

Peter The 7th South Staffs was an infantry regiment and he could have been only the rank of Private, Corporal Sgt, etc. Driver rank was only found in the Army Service Corps or the Artillery. The Soldiers Died in the Great War and the CWGC have down as a Private which is correct. Terry

What was his name and service number? If we can establish what regiment or Corps he served in then we can probably say if it was a lorry or a horse. Terry

The 15th Royal Warwicks on 3/9/16 were involved in an attack on a German strongpoint known as Falfemont Farm. Which was situated to the south of the village of Guillemont. If you can get a copy of my book 'Birmingham Pals' from your local library, I give an account of the attack. The 1/6th...

My Grandad - Ernest William HOWSE

I have had a look at his service papers and to be honest a lot of it is quite hard to read and there is also info regarding being AWOL at the end of the war and being sent back to France under escort in early 1919. He attested for service on 10 December 1915, whilst living in Bristol. It seems...

I cannot explain why his name and number was not mentioned in the Birmingham Battalions Book of Honour. However, he is not the only original volunteer not mentioned. I can tell you that he served in B Company, 8 Platoon Terry

Do you have a photograph of him taken at the time so I might see if he his pictured in any photographs of the 1st Birmingham Battalion that I have. I see on his medal index card that he was later commissioned into the Cheshire Regiment. Terry

    Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Roy The Territorial Force in 1917 changed all TF service men's army numbers into six figure service numbers. His Royal Warwickshire six figure service number 306887 was part of the block allocated to the 8th Bn. So he either served in the 1/8th or 2/8th battalions before transferring to the...

Hi Alan The same photograph was published in, if I remember corectly, in the Birmingham Daily Post sometime during September 1914. I actually saw the paper on the microfilm at the central library and took a photo of it with my digital camera. As a time expired soldier would he still not be a...
