    Royal Warwickshire 10th Battalion

Hello John Your grandfather's name and number was listed in the Birmingham Daily post casualty list on 6 September 1916. The actual date of when he was wounded would be around 1 to 2 weeks prior to the publication date. All I can say at the moment, is that he was wounded on the Somme. I...

    Charles Tonks B.1887

Looking at the Commonwealth War Graves site, Charles Tonks, is buried at LONGUENESSE (ST. OMER) SOUVENIR CEMETERY, France. Which was on our side of the lines during the war. I doubt very much he was a POW or he would have been buried in a Cemetery that was once in German territory. Regards Terry

Hello Diane First, I must apologise, I did not see the messages you posted to me four weeks ago. The only way you can make sure to his war service is to obtain his medals. They will have his number and regiment stamped on them. If no one in the family has got them. Then, I think you can only...

14th Bn, Royal Warks Regt (1st Birmingham Bn) - service of Pte Joseph W Marsden

Hello Diane The service number of Pte J W Marsden, 41882, indicates that he was not an original volunteer to the 1st B'ham Bn in 1914. His medal index card shows that he did not enter a theatre of war until after 1st Jan 1916. He was most likely called up and posted to the battalion during the...

It looks like he served in a Territorial Force Royal Engineers Company. There was one in Birmingham attached to the 48th South Midland Division T F. The badge on his tunic was known as the Imperial Service badge. It was given to each man if the majority of his unit volunteered to serve overseas...

Hello Alan, It is also the centenary of the raising of Birmingham's three 'Pals' battalions; the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Birmingham Battalions (14th, 15th & 16th Royal Warwickshires). I know we are three years away, but I would be willing to support and contribute to any ideas raised. Regards Terry

Hello Jane The original volunteers for Birmingham's three Pals battalions, in September 1914, were made up from the non-manual workers of the City and suburbs. Would it be possible for me to have the names of these relatives? regards Terry
