    Monument Road

Thanks Mikejee, I hadn't got this map - are they back online now? I did clock the info on Thomas Beach. Following his death, Sarah sold off the lower part of the nursery, suggesting it was quite extensive. I had also noted the name of Beach Street and wondered if it referred to this family or...

This is about the time they dismantled the place and sold off bits before redevelopment of the area.

    Monument Road

Does anybody have any old maps of the Rotton Park area - pre-OS maps, say, early 19th century? I am trying to locate Spring Grove House, once the home of the glass entrepeneur William Chance who died in 1856.

    Monument Road

Yes, she is listed in Icknield Street West but close to Ladywood Place which I suspect was near Ladywood Lane [later Ladywood Road]. In terms of the census she was not far from Icknield Port Road so it suggests she was in that part of the road. As I state on my web page, Monument Lane extended...

    Monument Road

My page sort of explains the road name changes and where and when etc. Yes, I have the Vine Inn but, so far, not placed it exactly.

    Monument Road

Flippin' 'eck, this has sparked an interest in this road, one in which I have done hardly any research. However, I have plenty of pics, some of which are the same as Lyn's gallery of Carl Chinn photos. I have hit upon a couple of snags already. Where exactly was the Vine Inn and the EXACT year...

    IN OUR GARDEN 2023

Maturing nicely but I have to do a lot of maintenance. The nets on the side in this photograph were temporary to keep predators off the frog spawn.

    Barton's Arms High Street Aston

It was not a reprimand and I certainly was not offended. My comment was tongue-in-cheek.

    Monument Road

I cannot follow that link as it is for admin only. But anyway, I was referring to the pub as your sentence suggests that had moved ... "The Bridge Inn was commented upon and it apparent move. But it is in Monument Road so not really out of place here."

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL ON BHF 2023

Just logged in to wish folks a Happy 2023. I have not done much on Birmingham of late as I have been busy on other projects. However, today [although over the border] I have uploaded the very first issue of The Deerstalker from 1948. There must be another buried in an attic somewhere but this is...

I really miss those 1950s maps that have been taken off the Old Maps site.

Architectural Guide to Birmingham and the Black Country

Reading his text, Pevsner does come across as a bit of a grump, even cantankerous. Of course, I don't know what he was like in real life but I have often come across a building that I enjoyed looking at only to find him lambasting it for one reason or another.

Hard to say, the dinner lasted longer but she was a bit grumpy about the food. George was in one of his jovial moments but I only had the one drink with him.

Architectural Guide to Birmingham and the Black Country

We have taken a Pevsner guide in a bag when out-and-about cycling. It can get you into trouble when trying to look at some of the country houses.

Well, it is hard to top trump beans on toast with Sean Connery but I have had dinner with Joan Collins and a drink with George Best.
