    Borderlines

Cheers Maurice, I think it is even more complicated by people. For example, the house in which I grew up was technically in Old Hill but I identified with Cradley Heath. A key reason for asking the question is that I am doing a little work on Brearley Street and would not wish to upset somebody...

    Borderlines

Where does one district end and another one begin. There are parish maps with boundaries clearly marked so it is easy to determine which parish a given street was in. However, take Brearley Street for example, where EXACTLY does it leave New Town and enter Hockley? This crops up in many streets...

    The Sailors Return

I have just typed a paragraph on this pub which may be of interest : "The name of the house suggests that a mariner returned to Birmingham with sufficient booty to open a public-house. The earliest mention I have seen of the Sailor's Return is an entry in the licence register dated 1819 in...

    Farm Street Hockley

Joseph Linforth was running it as the Castle Tavern in 1859 but advertised the business as he was in a financial pickle. He was later bankrupt.

    Swan Inn/White Swan/Spring Gardens - Floodgate Street

Well, I have been on it all day but this should clear up the issue of the location(s) of the Spring Gardens and the birth of the Swan Inn, later to become the White Swan : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/floodgate-street/white-swan.htm Or, if you only like pics and no text ......

    Swan Inn/White Swan/Spring Gardens - Floodgate Street

Allow me to explain how I started along this route. When I uploaded a brief history of the St. Matthias' Tavern I noticed that Harry and Lily Ashfield moved to the White Swan in Floodgate Street. I was only going to place a link but got intrigued. The building now trades as The Ruin and has a...

    Frankfort street, Hockley

I thought I would ask the question as the forum often comes up trumps .... "Does anybody know who the little girl is in this 1961 photograph?" She is sat on the step of the Justice Inn on the corner of Great Russell Street. IMHO a lovely period pic.
