I remember Tays the butchers (think they were on the Cov just by the traffic lights opposite Wordsworth Rd?) & was it Collins the grocers. A Small Heath Lass

Thats brilliant Jan I could just hear Miss Jones barking out her questions & answers..........remember how she would call you 'lass', the old boot!! She once broke a ruler in half over little Johnny Clements hand! I do seem to remember a student teacher called Miss Savin, was she related to the...

    A Small Heath Lass

Eeek, my Mom had a run in with Miss Walton too, over the very same thing!!! How strange is that eh, she must've been well known for it.lol I'll have to ask my Mom who the lady Head was (she has a marvelous memory, mine is pants!). I was 'biscuit monitor' for some time & part of that was taking...

    A Small Heath Lass

Oh good grief, I certainly remember Miss Walton as I was in her class (she used to let you have 2 teeny sheets of loo roll if you ever needed to go out during her class!!!). Remember Mr Jackson too altho I think there was a woman who was head at some stage in my time there. Also remember Miss...

Jan, you must've been at Somerville around the same time as me then, I can vaguely remember some of the teachers names, Miss Jackson, Miss Savin, the lovely lovely Mr Barber (my hero), the dreaded Miss Jones who took top class (I spent the entire year in her class absolutely terrified!!). No...

    "old saying"

My Mom still uses that expression "on aline" to mean 'cross/angry' etc !

    Lar Pom

My Nan & Grandad (on my Dads side) used to use that expression too, the Lar Pom......as if it was a more genteel way of saying 'going to the loo'!! Mind, they did think themselves quite posh compared to my Moms family. Haven't heard it used in years....must start using it now eh?

    The Pelham

I didnt know the pub as a customer Astonian, more it's a shame that old buildings get knocked down & the 'Pelham' area I remember so well from my teen years as I'd catch the 28 bus home to Hodge Hill from there. I think my parents mentioned something about it being a bit of a dodgy pub altho as...

Have your taste buds changed over the years?.

Well I've never like egg yolks & that's not changed throughout my life. Still hate sprouts, cabbage etc too. I used to like fish when I was younger but now cant stand the stuff. I've always loved Bovril ever since I was little. So nope, very little has changed in the tastebud stakes for me.

Your first pint/cherryB/gin & it/etc (delete as applicable)

Ooops, sorry Stan.lol........nah, still a proud Brummie at heart despite living up north for nearly 30yrs, but I am married to a Scotsman so words/accent/dialects have merged somewhat over time. Returning to topic......the teachers would drink down the Pelham & we'd be up the Broadway so that...
