    Key Hill Cemetery

At long last I managed to visit Key Hill a couple of weeks ago on when I made it down to Brum for almost 2 weeks (oh it was bostin to be down 'home' again). I took somewhere in the region of 100+ pics that day, the bluebells were so beautiful & the whole place had such a lovely calm atmosphere...

    Silver Blades Ice Rink

Yes Andrew, this was indeed the very same chap, Les.....he was just as you describe him........& us kids used to love to be spun around by him. He also taught us a certain 'foxtrot' where he would go round & round in circles, crossing his feet over each other, getting faster & faster. He had...

    Silver Blades Ice Rink

Just had another 'golden oldie' moment.....does anyone remember a Chris Harrison at Silver Blades? He was in his late teens maybe back in the 70's & was a fabulous skater (& rather handsome too as I remember!!!!) who could land some fantastic jumps. Some of the professionals (teachers) used to...

    Silver Blades Ice Rink

I know there's another thread on here somewhere but a quick search & I still couldnt find it so thought I'd pop in here. Frederick James DOLPHIN - Gun Engraver

Wow, thank you very much Mikejee....I only knew some of this so all this extra stuff is brill. He was living in Weaman St in 1841, 51, 61, 71 but then is in Wright St in 1881 etc. What I really would love to find out is how to go about finding out where/who etc he did his apprenticeship with. I...

Frederick James DOLPHIN - Gun Engraver

I have my Frederick James Dolphin in Kellys 1880 directory as a Gun Engraver at Harpers Buildings, 16 Weaman Street, Birmingham, but am wondering if there are any mentions of him in later directorys. If it's not too much trouble, I'd really appreciate it if anyone who had access to later...

    The War in Burma

This is my Dad (standing in front of car, smoking pipe) in India. Before going into Burma, he was in India being 'fattened up' & then afterwards when he came out of the jungle, he was recovering there too (malaria etc).

    Silver Blades Ice Rink

Thank goodness someone else remembers Big Les, I was starting to think I'd made it up or dreamt it!!. I'd mentioned it a few times on this thread & no-one seemed to mention him........I can see him now, very clearly in my mind in his rusty red jumper skating towards us to spray us with ice!! He...

    The War in Burma

Y'know, my Dad has a Burma Star but I have never seen it.........it's wrapped up & put away in some cupboard...........he wont talk about his time in Burma at all other than to say "its the past". Dad was a Chindit & something in me says I should be very proud of my Dad (I am anyway, not because...

    Pronounciation of Alcester

Oh there are some belters 'up there' Barry, it was years & years before I understood where Alf & his Mom were discussing 'Grenville' place at the top of Hawthorn........they meant 'Grahamfield Place'!! Doh. I love the 'Milguy' one...a cracker. Hearing Alf etc pronounce 'Lochwinnoch' makes me...

    Pronounciation of Alcester

Another one here who calls it All-ses-ter........it's strange isn't it how we grow up using certain names & pronunciations & it sticks. I do giggle when I hear the lady's voice at the train station saying 'Alvechurch' (sounding the 'v' as in Al-ver-church) as she pronounces it totally different...

Your first pint/cherryB/gin & it/etc (delete as applicable)

Your first pint/cherryB/gin & it/etc (delete as applicable)

I think my first drink would've been a Pink Lady in the Broadway pub on Bordesley Green......we'd gone there from school (Saltley Grammar) as the staff went to the Pelham. We'd be about 17 I suppose) Otherwise it was vodka & lime at the Rio near Yardley where we layabouts went on a Sunday evening.:)
