    Vinegar Salad

Oh I absolutely love cucumber & onions in vinegar.......wonderful stuff. Yes it takes me back to 'the old days' too....when on a Sunday evening we'd have tea in front of the coal fire. Mom would sometimes make toast, cut into fingers with mashed pilchards/sardines whatever on top, which I...

    Davies Samson

Thanks so much for your efforts Astonian, Pomgolian & Alberta.......its so vexing isn't it when you 'lose' a person (its as if they went out of their way to be awkward & remain 'hidden'!!:D). This Samson (ok...could have been Samuel, tired that one as well) was a miner (coal) & his father was...

    Davies Samson

I'm trying to find the whereabouts of this man in the 1881 census & so far have drawn a blank. I'm searching on behalf of a friend, it was her Grandfather. Samson Davies was born in 1867, in Wednesbury/Sedgley, Staffs...his father was Charles Davies. I've found him in 1891 & 1901 on Ancestry...

    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Thanks Oisin, my memories must be from the smelly Midland Red bus station I think. It always seemed 'thick' with smoggy fumes whenever you went in, & you took your life in your hands trying to get to a bus stand!! I do remember the coach station tho as well, that seemed a tad bleak too.

    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Am I thinking of the right one, it used to smell awful with all the fumes!!! Just down from the Bull Ring...with all the Midland Reds & coaches (on the same side of the road as the Bull Ring).

Houses, who were Bakers in smallheath

Oh that pic is great Pete, I'll show it to Mom & see if she remembers him. She reckons she worked there from when she was about 21-ish up until '57. She used to suffer terrible probs with arthritis & could barely walk some days after a heavy shift, so one of the van drivers would take her home...

Houses, who were Bakers in smallheath

Oooh Pete, what a lovely memory. My Mom worked for them for many years & always comes out with stories. I think she said the boss was Mr Pratt?? Does that sound familiar. She must've been there in the 1950s & left when she had me (1957). I got the impression it was quite a small bakery (the...

    A Victorian Album

I feel so lucky to have been left lots of original old photos of my ancestors, I've scanned & 'touched up' many of them & put the reprints in albums with documentation for my children to read about in years to come. Hopefully I'll be able to add a couple here......... The lady on the left is...
