    My mother worked at the Apex, she got off the bus near the Aldridge Road fire station just as a huge fire burst through the factory roof, she dashed into the fire station to tell them, one of the firemen said "Ok missus we'll deal with it."

    There seems to be some damage/smudge to the photo, in the middle of the H pathways and that's where the brook was.

    I worked at Hawthorn garage there in 1950 when I was fifteen, just out of school, down from Kingstanding and turn right at the Parson and Clerk, it was a workshop with petrol forecourt and an orchard round the back with a few pre-war cars parked among the trees. Used to watch the red squirrels...

    I had a siren in my shop for the cold war, 60s/70s never tested it though it was in a crate at the back of my workshop.

    Hurlingham Road Kingstanding

    Pre war I'd say Pedro. not quite sure which end it is I don't remember the bollards and lamppost. I'll have a wander on Google earth and see if I can place it. It's at the bottom end junction with Danesbury Crescent, the lamppost has been updated and the bollards replaced with keep left signs.

    Likewise the Doffer, the machine he's working at has Taunton Massachusetts on the end. I did though have a great uncle who was a Birmingham lamplighter.

    I never did the Mail place the ball but dad did every time, he could put lots of crosses on it, never won a thing. I did one in Readers Digest, you could only put one cross, it was a rugby match throw in. I tossed a cushion across the room to judge where it should be and hit the spot dead on...
