    Thanks MWS - that would be right - the Edward Griffin that was the lock-keeper was living in Newbury for the 1841 census and he died in 1850 still living in Newbury..... it was sometime later the family moved to Birmingham. The sculpture they mention sounds interesting. I must visit one day :)

    My G-G-G-Grandfather was a lock keeper - and they were living in Northbrook Street on the 1841 census - would the locks be near there??

    That's fabulous - thanks. I dare say his Dad made use of the beerhouses - my Grandad was under 5 yrs old when they left Birmingham to come to Cardiff - so I hope he wasn't partaking of their offerings! :) Just noticed on the map - Vampire Yard - that sounds a really fun place (not) lol

    Thanks Lyn. I don't have his war records, but have researched quite thoroughly and as far as can be ascertained - they are ones that didn't survive. However, I have loads of information other than that. He hasn't got a grave, as his body was never recovered. He is listed on the La Ferte Sous...

    Thank you so much. Although my Grandad was born there - sometime before the 1891 census they had moved to Cardiff, where, when he grew up, he married my Grandmother Grace Lilian Rowe. He was in the army from 1904 until 1909 (when he got married) and rejoined the army at the start of ww1...
