    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

I seem to recall getting my model airplane building resources, dope, balsa wood and supplies from the shop on Temple Row at the corner of Temple Street? I recall walking around past the back of Rackhams at the rear of the St. Philip's Cathedral. Come to think of it, looking at a map of the...

    In the garden 2022

Beautiful Passion Flower Janice! Agreed, sometimes garden centre plants can be overrated and definitely over priced. We rarely get a -20C out here on the west coast of Canada, usually -10C being the lowest. This past winter we actually lost about five perennials that were well established.

Agreed then Terence, it isn't just my locale! That provides me with some measure of comfort. I usually get an 80-90% germination success on most seeds, but even those grown this year haven't turned any decent growth rate. 50-60% germination seems to be my average this year at best, which is okay...

    Erdington Market Closing Down.

Thanks for posting John. Perhaps the only plus, is that there are no visible tent city homeless camps filling the sidewalks like there are in so many cities such as Vancouver. I enjoyed viewing the video walk, passing stores that were familiar from my childhood through adulthood. Not too much...

    In the garden 2022

Thanks so much!. I'm not an avid gardner by nature, but believe that a well-kept property no matter how old, is a pleasure to enjoy. I raced cars and motorcycles for many years, but always maintained the gardens. A race car or offroad vehicle parked on a nicely kept property, brings no negative...

    Smethwick

When my wife's cousin Freddie ran the Shelton Inn in Halesowen before retiring, he took me down for a tour of his pride and joy, the well-organized cellar, maintained at I believe was 56 degrees. A large pipe affectionately known as the "Python" ran from the barrel piping, up around the wall of...

Lloyd, that's a beautiful example of retained architecture that needs to be maintained and appreciated instead of facing the wrecking ball, only to be replaced by faceless reflective mirror glass frontages that are so popular world-wide today. Thanks for posting.

    Smethwick

I was thinking about Smethwick earlier today and recalled seeing a listing in the back of one of my Alton's Birmingham Books for "Joe Russell's Smethwick" as shown in the listing image below from the back cover inside page. I don't have a copy of that publication, but for those interested...

    Erdington Market Closing Down.

Lyn, One Christmas, I joined the Boy Scouts there, in the Salvation Army Hall next to the Army Surplus shop on Erdington High Street, (1st Erdington, 15th Birmingham). Most of our members were from the Cottage Homes Orphanage on Reservoir Road and very appreciative of those of us who took the...

    Erdington Market Closing Down.

Agreed, it is probably better to remember the old market fondly for it's heyday and the people who brought it to life. All too often, we are disappointed when looking back through the proverbial "rose-tinted glasses", at things and places that no longer represent their former glory and have...

I couldn't even hazard a guess on the age of the The Pheasant pub, but found this: https://pubwiki.co.uk/Warwickshire/BirminghamP/PheasantAbbey.shtml and this link which identifies that the current pub building was built over the original Victorian building in the 1930s , if "Soup Dragon's...

Nice pics! It looks like everything is doing just fine. We have had a very slow growing season even in the greenhouse for annuals this year, until a couple of weeks ago. Still, there's nothing quite so satisfying as nurturing some tiny plants along, or growing from them from seed. However, I...

It's sad to see so many of those old landmark pubs gone forever. Unfortuantely, these buildings are often over 100 years and the effects on the wooden structure content from nicotine and other chemicals in combination, damaged many of these once pristine buildings so badly, that most could...

    Erdington Market Closing Down.

I remember the old market very well from living in Erdington from 1952-1974. Our Mom (Mum) took us three boys shopping there often on our excursions to Erdington High Street, Woolworths, Littlewoods and a host of other shops. Mention of these old landmarks, resurrects many fond memories of my...

King Edwards Grammar School Aston 1883

If that is the same Patrick Burns that you are speaking of, we were friends during our childhood and early teen years. He lived with his Mom in Jerrys Lane near the right of way to Glendon Road between Raford Road. If he is one and the same, I did hear that he ventured into the media. I forgot...

Nice! Here in BC Canada, Bird Flu popped up a few weeks ago, so our bird feeders have been emptied, washed and stored to reduce the spread to poultry. Bears, skunks and rodents love the feed too, so cleanliness is a must! I do like your globe feeder. We have squirrel resistant feeders, but...

    Gone out of fashion

Agreed, there's nothing quite like it. Then again, sliced on a cheese sandwich with salad cream is to die for!

    Gone out of fashion

When I was a nipper, I remember being bathed in the galvanised bath by my Mom in my Nan's kitchen, right in front of the Dometic stove in their old house in Aston. It was nice and toasty warm in there! Any time the old Steptoe and Son show came on TV over the years, it always made me chuckle...

    Cutler - Glass Merchants

Hi Jennifer. I am also very late to this thread, but have a few distinctive memories of visits to Pierce and Cutler. In the mid to late '60s while I was still at school, into my driving years and the early 70s, I worked part-time for Wheelers Timber and Builders Merchants in Hampton Road off...

Moving away but always a Brummie

Yam awroight mite, 'ower yo goooin? :) My wife's cousin Freddie Games (RIP) and wife Gillie (RIP) moved out to Halesowen years ago and ran the Shelton Inn in Belle Vale, I think until it closed down and they retired. My last visit there was in 2004. The Inn had originally been an old mill. It...
