    School visits to factories

I too worked in the machine tool department in the 1970s. I did my apprenticeship there, I wonder if we know of each other?

    OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Hi Mark, I am looking at some lovely Photos of Fort Dunlop on here, I did an apprenticeship in the machine tool department between 1974 and 1978 leaving in 1981. You mention a small branch of TSB which I banked with and still sort of do. It was the first bank account I opened to put my wages...

    New Thomas Street

Yes, the Scottish map site is very good and I have been trying to collect old maps beyond that, but you guys on here have a whole lot I don't have and is has been so helpful. Back in the day families in Birmingham all lived very close, my Grandmother and some of her siblings was born in...

    New Thomas Street

Looks like New Thomas Street turned in the Gem Street; all long gone now, buried under Aston University

    New Thomas Street

Very much appreciated thank you, that is amazing and no where near where I thought it would be, but there is a sad little tale to this too. In the census record I posted the first Jones family are my G. G. Grandparents. The wife of Thomas, Sarah Jones nee Gwyther, perished in a fire in Doe...

    New Thomas Street

Thank you all for the responses, I am a keen family historian and this site has helped me enormously over the years helping me to find streets and street numbers along with photo's. The attached 1871 census details 'New Thomas Street', my ancestors are the first family of Jones's. I suspect...

    New Thomas Street

I have an 1871 census of some ancestors living in New Thomas Street, looking at old maps I find this street illusive, is it the same street as Thomas Street or Upper Thomas Street or somewhere else. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    St Philips Tavern, Church Street.

I think I am turning into an old grumpy bugger and I know it is Valentines but I wish I could stop these hearts floating across the screen, I am past my sell by date, so they are really annoying. Thanks for the map does this map extend further down church street with where St Philips tavern...

    St Philips Tavern, Church Street.

This is a wonderful photo, but I am curious, I have some old maps circa 1888-1900. I am aware things can change quickly but none of my maps show this hotel. Any idea what the earliest useful/detailed maps are available for this part of Birmingham and if so where can I get them?

    St Philips Tavern, Church Street.

Hi Astoness, what wonderful photos in their own right posted later. I did see google maps and noticed the end building looks slightly different to the rest of the Grand Hotel, may be extra floors were added or it is a new building.

    St Philips Tavern, Church Street.

Thanks Lyn, I made a error in my post that I could't edit later but I should have said it was probably somewhere between Edmund Street and Cromwell Street, if the house numbers are still about the same it is not near the Grand hotel which is still there. Does anyone have house numbers for Church...

    St Philips Tavern, Church Street.

I am doing some research on a mysterious Great Grandfather of mine who went by the name of Henry Edward Hicks. He was born in Paddington, London abt. 1851 and it appears that Henry was orphaned, a foundling, given away or of a single mother but of unknown parents. I am doing some research...

Hi Sue, I think I remember you when I was a little boy, I may have met you since but cant remember. Your mum Ivy and my mum Margaret were best friends from the days when they worked in Lewis's in Birmingham until sadly they are no longer with us. I believe my mum visited your grandparents at...

    Watery Lane

Not sure but assume you are asking me about the photos from my previous post. They should show up as an attachment or thumbnails, are you saying they don't? I have trouble downloading any images of here these days, when I try photo viewer tells me there is an error with them. Very strange but...

    Watery Lane

That is a bit of a disappointment, I have no idea why my great grandparents lived in Watery Lane it is sort of out of context with where they lived before and after, but attached is the wedding cert. I also downloaded the attached photo and was hoping it was one of the houses at the far end, it...
