That pair of shears over the front door was a real landmark. Thanks for the reminder.

my family always referred to Harborne as "the village".

Thanks for that. Still no clearer on the moving model then, pity there are no old photos anywhere.

Janice, Thanks again. Another bit of Brum that is no more.

Birmingham Battery & Metal Co Selly Oak

Many thanks. Yes, I think that is the building, but sad to see it in that state. The display window I am thinking about was in the bottom right of the picture as you look at it. The fact that it was Birmingham Battery fits with my recollection of a permanently moving model - battery-powered I...

Birmingham Battery & Metal Co Selly Oak

Janice, Thanks. I do remember some ivy I think. It was an unusual building, but it was attractive. It was like a retail frontage but to a factory of some sort. Peter

Can anyone remember and put a name to the building on the Bristol Road near the canal and railway that used to have some sort of clockwork or battery display in the window? It was on your left as you headed into the city centre.

Never mind the camera, that is a great picture. Decked out in your Sunday best to see the grand-parents.

This picture brings back memories. The two-tone Triumph Herald suggests this photo was taken in the early 60's, because the Herald was only launched in 1959 (I think). I think the England shoe shop replaced Bakers shoe shop. The K Shoes label is just to do with the main product being sold...

The 'soldier' second from the right looks like a waxwork. Perhaps somebody's way of getting an extra cup of tea and a wad.

Leave it, leave it to Lee, leave it to Lee Longland, Longland - I doubt you would get same day delivery with that particular vehicle!

Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

All very posed, of course, but some of it rings true. The boy's short trousers (no doubt with a button fly), his short back and sides haircut and his 'unisex' sandals. Also, both adults are smoking and Mum's dress looks very fifties. The Bakelite TV is spot on, but where is the indoor...

I remember cycling at speed along Vivian Road heading for High Street and with my mind not on the traffic (very much lighter then). I think I was probably about twelve. I went straight across the junction without stopping and remain eternally grateful to the alert car driver coming from the...

The Sportsman looks a bit run down in this photo. When I used to go there in the early seventies it was quite the place to be.

This takes me back. especially those cars. I see a Daimler (p0ssibly a Majestic), Morris Minor Traveller, Riley and (I think) Standard Vanguard. The last time I visited Rose Road you would have been pushed to find a parking space. Chad Valley toys were great and the fire station in Rose Road was...
