    Dunlop

Yes I love those little bits of history. Thanks for your comments, they enabled me to connect this postcard in my box of photos to her story. I wonder if she and my grandad used to go there when they were courting.

    Dunlop

Great history of Dunlop developing on this thread. Thought this might be of interest. Envelope with the Dunlop logo (1932) and letter sent to my grandmother who used to work in the typing pool at Dunlop. She left when she got married and evidently sent some wedding cake to her colleagues.

    The Cross Pistols, Slaney Street

There is a public house (presumably The Cross pistols) recorded in the 1861 census at 86 Slaney Street. Publican Samuel Parsons (who presumably bought it when it was sold in 1860). He lived there with his wife Jane, children: Thomas, Polly, Samuel (a brassfounder), Frederick (a brassfounder), 1...

    Henry Street Aston

Hi I had a look on the census. My family lived at 89 Henry Street and the Silks were at 91 Henry Street (on the corner with Coleman street I believe) in the 1911 census. Sarah Silk is listed as a widow and head of the household. By 1939 the Mayner family are listed at number 91 so I assume that...

Old Birmingham Schools - Changed Or Demolished

I have found an old book belonging to my Grandmother with a plate in the front awarding her the book from St James' Ashted Henry St Girls School. The problem is from what I have read that the school closed in 1894. This would have been before my grandmother was born, and the book itself was...

    Spring Hill

I think this is 134 Spring Hill circa. 1915-1920's. It has two numbers above the door 57 and the painted 34 which I think is 134 going on trade directories and census - possible evidence of renumbering? It was a Watchmaker's shop run by my great, great grandad Louis McCourt (1856-1931).He grew...
