Address plaques and nameplates for Terraces, Villas, Places etc

Another group of plaques with added interest because they show the amazing growth of Birmingham in the 1880s -90s. They are all in an area North of Cannon Hill Park covered by the Ordnance Survey maps of 1888/1889 on the National Library of Scotland website - Here is one showing what was then...

In "manage Videos" you should see the heading "Visibility" - Click on it and change it from "private" to "public".

Not seeing it at the moment I'm afraid Smudger - If you go back into your Youtube channel - go to "manage videos" and change the videos setting from "private" to "public" it should start working - You shouldn't need to post the link again. It should just start working.

    Heneage Street

Seeing Heneage Street pop up in the threads I thought I'd post my Father's (James Dell) recollections of it. They were bombed out of their house in Sunningdale Road in 1941 and moved to Heneage Street. We then moved to 91, Heneage Street, Ashted, Birmingham. The real reason for this I do not...

    RNLI Post

Indeed, -It's at the Village of Whitehills on the coast near Banff. But these knitted "postbox toppers" have been popping up all over, to mark occasions. They started off during Covid to thank the NHS. May Lane in Hollywood/Drakes Cross has had a succession of them in the last couple of years. I...

    Northfield Post Office 1938

Great photos. It is the same place, as you say the "new" front portion is the front-of-office Post office, the rear brick building is now purely a delivery office where post vans pick up letters and parcels for delivery. My friendly postman tells me that only the most rudimentary "sorting" goes...

Address plaques and nameplates for Terraces, Villas, Places etc

A cluster of plaques with dates at one end of George Arthur Road, nearest Alum Rock Road. 13-15 George Arthur Road, Vickerstaff Place, 1877 25-27 George Arthur Road, Woolwich Place, 1878 35-37 George Arthur Road, Ilkley Villas, 1890 At first glance it seems strange that there should be a gap...

Address plaques and nameplates for Terraces, Villas, Places etc

Wow! That makes perfect sense now! I thought the plaque referred to the building it was on - but it is actually the building that is/was behind the building in some cases.

    Birmingham in the 1980s

The first VHS and Betamax video recorders were sold in the UK in about 1978 - They were expensive and therefore quite rare until the early 1980s, but by 1985-86 the majority of family homes would have had one (often rented rather than purchased outright). In the 1970s there was a craze for...

Address plaques and nameplates for Terraces, Villas, Places etc

Hi Viv - I wouldn't be so sure about the trees - The hi-res ordinance survey of 1886 shows Saltley to be mainly "ribbon development" - I'm guessing that all these "Villas" "places" and "Cottages" would have been on the edge of the country when they were originally built - all in turn then...

Have edited the above. I found a better view of 162-164. I originally thought it read "Glenthorps" - but I can see now it's "Glenthorpe".

This website about similar plaques in Loughborough would seem to suggest the initials being the name of the house builder or architect. https://lynneaboutloughborough.blogspot.com/2016/02/victorian-house-plaques.html

A cluster of buildings on the Washford Heath Road in Saltley has some interesting plaques - Some with very early dates. On the one side is a complex of buildings much knocked about over the years - It ends up merging with the Saltley Inn. 37 Washwood Heath Road, Yiewsley Cottage, 1860 39...

The Birmingham home of a retired Sherlock Holmes? :) - Or maybe just someone who thought "This'll puzzle them in a hundred years time!" :)
