Christmas Traditions – What Were Yours Growing Up?

I remember the annual trip with my brothers into Birmingham city centre on the bus to see the Christmas lights and look at the window displays in the big department stores. Just before Christmas in 1968, we were taken into town in the late afternoon to see "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Although it...

    What 3 Words

There is another free app you can get called "OS Locate" - Released by the ordnance Survey. It will give you your location as a grid reference and also estimate your altitude. - Ideal if you ever have to call on the coastguard, lifeboat or mountain rescue, or just confirm where you are on an OS...

    What 3 Words

I've been using it for a few years. Its brilliant for meeting up with friends. I also use it a lot when reporting flytips, potholes and problems on public footpaths. In fact, where I live in Worcestershire you are prompted for the What 3 Words location (if you have it) when reporting such...

    Hall Of Memory

Yes it does. I've already submitted a report including the photos I posted earlier. Yet to see if anything will come of it. - Other people posting the same concern can only help.

    Hall Of Memory

I note there is a petition on the Conservatives website to do something about the state of the Hall - But surely this should not be down to Party politics? https://www.birminghamconservatives.org.uk/campaigns/restore-birminghams-hall-memory

    Hall Of Memory

I was in Birmingham yesterday. - Walking past the Hall of Memory I noticed a bloke in the process of putting a poster on the side of it! - I challenged him and and he scarpered. But then I stood back to look at the state of the Hall. - Its quite shocking. There are plants growing out of the top...

    Bartley Green.

Another Great photo Pedrocut! I wonder how much use those nice windowboxes got?- Once again we have an issue of identity - Most people in that area would call it Woodgate rather than Bartley Green.

    Bartley Green.

:) Its in a "grey" area. Sort of on the border between Weoley castle and Bartley Green, in an area that was still called California by many up until the 70s or maybe Barnes Hill. When the RSPCA Dogs home was near there it was called the Barnes Hill dogs home. I guess any of the four names would...

Another great picture Pedrocut! Wonder what they meant by "River"? - Not many rivers in Bartley Green! - I think this may be the Mill and Mill pond that used to be in the corner of what is now Senneleys Park. The road on that edge is called Mill Lane. It was served by the brook that runs through...

    Bartley Green.

Thanks for those pictures of the Library, Pedrocut. I spent many a happy hour in there in the 1969/70 going through their collection of Eagle Comic annuals. It was reading the "Eagle Book of Aircraft" there as an 11 year old that set me on course for joining the RAF later. Happy days! It had...

    Bartley Green.

The old Church was demolished in 1968, it had been unused for some years and was "derelict". The New Church was opened in 1966. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Michael_and_All_Angels%27_Church,_Bartley_Green You can see the Graves in the old Churchyard in this satellite view on Google Maps...

    Bartley Green.

Fantastic pictures there Pedrocut! If I remember right (and I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong!) - The New Church was not built on the site of the old church. The old Church was by the Library, at the junction of Field Lane and Genners Lane. The graveyard is still there, hidden behind a...

    Stratford Road

Could it be the "Model Aerodrome" company who made the "Drome" range of flying model aircraft? - There offices were at 144 Stratford Road, Sparkbrook in 1942/43. - Here is a copy of one of their ads from December 1942. At that stage they were manufacturers who sold their products through other...

Help with writing on photo please.

I think this is the clincher - This modern snap of the North side of the Church shows buttresses and a roof line that absolutely match up with the watercolour of "Priory Farm" in the V&A. - That picture was painted in 1940 may even show one of the Land Girls returning to her billet. - So Priory...

Help with writing on photo please.

Surely Post #17 would imply that the Land Girls were housed at the Big Southam House (now a hotel) - also known as Southam De La Bere. Here's the 1913 map - A is the current Pidgeon House building. B is what is currently called Priory Cottage (too small to accommodate many girls) - C is Southam...

Help with writing on photo please.

There is a small "Priory Cottage" only a hundred yards away from the Pidgeon House. Maybe some of the girls were billeted there but took their meals in the much bigger Pidgeon House. - On a map from 1900 the Pidgeon House is still called The Pidgeon House.

Help with writing on photo please.

Yep SuperDad! Spot On. - Its a building next to the Church at Southam Gloucestershire - Google Streetview doesn't list it but I've found a Property Listing for it - The Building is now called "The Pidgeon House"...

    Take Me High Film

Silly me - I'd done a search for "Take Me High" and "Cliff Richard" in the search box but nothing came up on the first page so I figured it had never been featured before - I've just stumbled upon this other posting from back in 2008 - so if a moderator can combine them, please do...
