    Radio

As near as I get to BRMB these days is Les Ross on Boom at 10am on a Sunday. ;) Talking of DJs, sadly today will be Johnnie Walker's last Sunday "Sounds of the 70s" show on Radio 2, after 58 years on air. Johnnie is unable to continue due to his terminal illness (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis)...

Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

Had a text this morning, claiming to be from: UK Department For Work and Pensions Reminder: The living subsidy for this year (2023 to 2024) is currently being distributed. You are now eligible to apply for this subsidy. You can apply through the link. We will review it as soon as possible and...

    George Road Erdington

A little more on the Sons of Rest. It was established when a group of retired working men, veterans of WWI, met at Handsworth Park in 1927 and one of them, proposed that they form a club. It grew out of concern amongst retired veterans of WW1 that there were no places that they could meet and...

    George Road Erdington

My grandmother told me that it was used by WW1 veterans. It sadly became another victim of arson in 2013 and had been at the park since 1930. Link below: https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/local-news/erdington-sons-rest-veterans-club-6254716

    Barton's Arms High Street Aston

A nice video below showing the Barton's as it was in 2011. I have also had it confirmed by a friend that the privacy boards are still in place, following the modernisation and re-opening...

Does anyone know which pub this was?

The first picture is of a Bingley Hall Trades Show (note the Bovril stand on the right) pity we can't spot the refreshment rooms (taps and all), although the second picture does show EH James's sample room and features Phoenix Dublin Stout.

Does anyone know which pub this was?

I would hope not. I can't say for sure though and if they did renew it, I would guess they would want it to look as near to the same as was possible. A lot of work was done on the pub (removing partitions between what had been the lounge and the bar for example), around 30-odd years ago, I think.

    Faulkes Furriers Edgbasto

The firm closed down in 1990.

Does anyone know which pub this was?

It used to have a darts board there in the 70s. It may well have been sectioned off before that, I also remember the window was perhaps lower (as in the original picture) back then. It was just a first thought though.

Does anyone know which pub this was?

Could it possibly be "The Old Contemptibles", which had a long bar (as I think, I recall from the 70s) before it was modernised (as shown below)?

    Cannon Hill Park

I see the Golden Lion made Central News last night. Birmingham Conservation Trust is working with a range of partners to try to secure a future for the building. They have asked for the public's support to progress with a full restoration and are asking people to get in touch with stories they...

    Birmingham City fc

I believe that it was built on the site of a brickworks Mark. As far as the rubbish was concerned, it was used to create height for the terracing on the Coventry Road side of the ground. The club offered the site as a tip and local people paid a total of £800 to dump an estimated 100,000 loads...

Slade Road Junior and Infant School Erdington

I was in the year below you I think and moved to the new Erdington Boys School to be one of their first 1st Year intake. I recall Mr Conduct and the Head who replaced him at Slade Road Mr Spinks. Teachers that I recall were Miss West, Mrs Harkin (deputy head), Miss Tooney, Miss Staunton, Mrs...

    Witton and District Allotments Limited

I still have a couple of my grandmother's shares too. She had cousins who lived in George Road and worked at Kynoch, who had allotment's and won gold medals in the 30's for their vegetables.

    Miniature & narrow gauge railways

Statfold Country Park was featured in a "Bargain Hunt" programme that I watched last week. 3 miles of track and it certainly did look well worth a visit.

Newsreader Kay Alexander - memories of Midlands Today

I watched that last night on the Midlands news. It must have been difficult to condense 60 years of programming into only a few minutes and they made a valiant attempt, albeit a few more news items would have been nice. I was surprised to hear that the BBC are to move out of the Mailbox and...

    Aston Hall

I looked back and found some previous pictures and information about this "glasshouse" (1858 - 1924?) - on the earlier pages 3 (post #80), 7 (#182, #201) & 8 (#234 #239), as well as some other informative posts on this, on and around those pages. Hope that helps clarify a couple of points.

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

Now sold by Nestle using the Quality Street brand name that they bought in 1988. It seems that all the chocolate is either manufactured or owned by a company outside the UK now.

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

That was true luxury and beyond my budget back then, they will be back on the shelves for Christmas though and they are a tasty little treat. :)
