    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Looking at the 1911 census it looks as though Amy lived at 'Beggars Bush' and this, like other places around the area, hopped about from county to county. At the time of the census it appears to have been in Perry Barr which was in Handsworth, Staffs.

    Amy Russell New Oscott Burial

Hi Janice, I'm wondering if she was buried at Witton Cemetery? Catholic burials took place there and it was opened in 1863. The question also arises as to where she attended church - St Nicholas church in Boldmere was the nearest Catholic church to New Oscott but it doesn't have a burial...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

We used to go to The Matador for lunch on a Saturday. They did a lovely 'cold table' and we always had a cheese salad (no onion).

Warstone Lane Stall and possible Grave location information, Saturday 28th October 2023.

Well done Strawberry Hunter. Some years ago I had real difficulty finding my 3x gt grandfather's grave and that of his son buried nearby. I got in touch with Handsworth who were looking after Warstone then and the lady I spoke to gave me wrong information so that led me astray. I've located the...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

However big a park and ride car park is it's never big enough. I live by Chester Road station and parking in neighbouring streets, including ours, is a real problem. I'm sure most people on this forum used to walk to school or go public transport (two buses for me), these days people won't walk...

    Pubs in Erdington

Hi Again Trendy you've probably seen this thread but just in case: https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/len-tiger-smith-1930s-birmingham-boxer.16619/

    Pubs in Erdington

Was it definitely in Erdington Trendy? I found this from 2009 when I was looking for boxing at the Rose and Crown in Gravelly Lane. However, this pub is in Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham. Posted by JohnO. The 'Rose and Crown' was once the home of the reknown 'Imperial Amateur Boxing Club'...

    Holidays of the past

Can't remember whether I've posted this before but it's at New Brighton Lido (now sadly lost to storms), around summer 1948 - who remembers knitted swimsuits? They got longer with the water and were always still damp when you came to put them on the next day.

    City Centre Photographs

Thanks David but it wasn't the design of the cathedral I was referring to but the setting - one hemmed in by poor dwellings. It's a lovely, elegant building and it's so sad that Birmingham saw fit to demolish the Bishop's House to build a road. I agree that it has more to do with German churches...

    High Street Deritend

Please Note: The image I'm referring to in my last post also shows the East Prospect with Cooper's Flemish design Mill on the hill behind.

    High Street Deritend

Hi Viv, firstly let me apologise for the scans - I haven't got the hang on this new PC yet - my other one crashed and I lost everything having not backed up for some time (everyone please note this warning!). In the first picture (Paul Leslie Line's book, Birmingham A History in Maps) you can...

    City Centre Photographs

Brilliant picture Cybil5973, it would be good to work out what the other buildings are. Pugin designed this cathedral to 'rise up' from its poor surroundings and every time I pass I wonder what he would make of the surroundings now. Am I right in thinking he modelled it on a cathedral in Paris...

    Greys Department Store

My Auntie Dolly and Uncle Arthur circled in red. Not sure Mom would have been there as she was 18 at the time. Can't find the rest of my relatives yet but will keep looking.

    OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Steve, we quite often watch Salvage Hunters on TV and the metal stools in the centre of the photo (post 646) are now worth a fortune. I wonder how many of them were just thrown on the skip when the factory closed. Wish I could remember what make they were.

Floppy Disc - Erdington Cottage Homes Evacuation

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. Another member has messaged me to say that he has a suitable drive so, fingers crossed, I should be OK thanks once again to this brilliant forum. Once I've sorted myself out I shall look at the info supplied above with regard to Lord Somery and...

Floppy Disc - Erdington Cottage Homes Evacuation

Good Morning, I have a disc but no computer to open it on! A long time ago I interviewed a lady for the church magazine who was a nursery nurse at the Cottage Homes. She volunteered to be evacuated during WW2 to Wales. At first they were housed at a Youth Hostel at Arthog / Dolgellau but Lord...

    West Bromwich Pub

Well, here's a photo of the other (obverse/reverse) side of the token. Not that it helps much though. It's a poor image and the token is quite worn but it was made in Birmingham. The centre you can read as 3d and as far as we can make out the wording says made by ???? Die Sinkers, Something...
