    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Now that I know he was mobilized as part of the government’s response to the miners’ strike, my great grandfather could be anywhere in the census! (I know he was out of the Navy by the time census day came, but he could’ve still been in the area where he had been serving.) The mystery continues!

    Thank you. I’m considering this.

Thank you. I am aware of that.

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Is it possible he was traveling and doesn’t appear on the census? (In the US, they’d come back around to the people who weren’t at home on the enumerator’s first visit, but with the English censuses, it seems the head of the family often filled out the forms, rather than a census bureau. For...

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

I know. That’s how I was able to see where my great grandmother was living in Wales. One of my Sims cousins in England has a subscription and found the record for me. I can’t ask her to do a ton of research, though. She was already nice enough to ask someone in London to check the archives when...

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

According to the WWI buff, he only served until the beginning of Jun 1921, so I don’t know where he was.

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

That’s possible. He had to be somewhere! Ha ha.

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Just to clear something up: I’ve been on a WWI forum, and someone informed me that my great grandfather would not have had to lie about his birth year to enter the Royal Navy. “The minimum age to enter the RN on his Special Service (SS) engagement was 18. His "actual" 18th birthday would have...

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Well that’s exactly what I was wondering! Ha ha. If it was from a roll of census records just for an institution or from a roll of census records where that place (Marle Hall) was located amongst other buildings. I can’t view the 1921 Census, so I’m working with limited information. Thank you!

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Right, but would the actual census page fit somewhere in this list? Or perhaps it was just among a non institution roll of census pages? (I understand how US Census rolls work much better than England/Wales ones, so I’m just assuming they are organized the same way, though I could be wrong.)

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Follow up question: I’ve been looking on “Introduction to institutions in the 1921 Census” (<—link), and, according to the Census image for my great grandmother being in Marle Hall, the location is Conway, Caernarfonshire, Wales (a.k.a. Conwy, Caernarvonshire), and the ED is 15. However, that is...

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Does that mean it would have occurred on the Sunday before that article was printed?

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

I thought it might be because of Sunday, but I wasn’t sure if the UK was the same as the US with that. Thank you!!

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Sorry I’m just getting around to this, but why would boys be charged for playing pitch and toss (which I understand is a game wherein people through coins at a wall)?

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Thanks so much for everyone’s help. Most of it still remains a mystery, but you all helped me greatly. If you happen to find anything in the future, let me know. I wish I had been aware of this site sooner! Jill

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

It names her father as Herbert Henry Hurley on her marriage record but also says her father is deceased on that same record (in 1934). Would they have put that because he no longer lived in England? Or to just “save face” again?

    Marle Hall - 1921 Census

Why wasn’t that done for Norah and Lottie? They were over the age of 15.
