    Back to backs in Ladywood

Just thought.. perhaps the bridge took it's it name from the nearby Icknield Square.

    Back to backs in Ladywood

Thanks Mikejee. I can see what you mean, I never knew the canal bridge was known as Icknield St as this street didn't commence until after crossing Dudley Road at Spring Hill then continuing towards Hockley. Nice map clarity of my house and the structure in question. By the way, if you look at...

    Back to backs in Ladywood

Hi Mikee, Thanks for the info but I don't think it is for me. Shakespeare Road was off Monument Road where Monument Lane Railway Station was. The number 71 on my map is 71 Monument Rd. which was a cafe.

    Back to backs in Ladywood

Hi, A long shot I think! I'm trying to find out what a building at the back of my house was used for. I lived at 103 Shakespeare Road from 1956 until 1968. At the bottom of our yard was a wall over which was a short sloping embankment down to the railway across from the platform of Monument...

    Bus Stops

Hi, Only just picked up on this thread but as we are talking Brush bodied Leylands I've attached a photo of a couple of them from my collection that show the curved edges that were needed to fit the plate under the cab as the width wasn't quite wide enough on this type of body. Also I have a...

    Birmingham 1969-73

Hi Mike, Just an observation on pic 20. The view is in the opposite direction looking towards Hockley along the one way section of Icknield St. What you see as the railway bridge is just a wall in the background. Thanks for all the other info.

    Garbett Street, Ladywood

Hi, I think this is on the corner of big Garbutt Street and King Edward's Rd. Looking to the right is up towards Monument Rd.

    Bristol Street 1950's, 60's

It looks like the thinking is towards it being a toilet and this maybe the answer. In Old Mohawks picture you can see that it has a centre entrance which is tiled and with the ventilated roof it looks that it is a large toilet building. A little detail that has come to light is that the...

    Bristol Street 1950's, 60's

Thanks for this photo from a different angle. At least we know what it looks like from the front. With such ventilation it could well have been a public convenience although a little extravagant compared to the normal!

    Bristol Street 1950's, 60's

Hi everyone, Can anyone help me with information and/or photo of a strange building in Bristol Street in the 50's/60's. I attach a picture, undated but around early 60's? of a no.19 City Circle bus that has just turned left into Gt. Colmore Street from Bristol Street. The Bell pub is just...

    Pubs Of The Past

Many thanks for the update. I do now remember she was the wife of the manager and the name Mervyn does ring a bell.☺

    Pubs Of The Past

Well remember The Shakespeare. I had my 21st there on a hot August night in 1975. Coincidentally I shared it with the landlady of the time - don't remember her name - who was , I think, 29 on the same day. Had an all nighter and emerged into the bright sunlight the next morning and just...

Great views, The Granville was opposite Bush House which lay back from Broad St and was the Housing Dept. offices.

    No 8 Bus Route

Hi Lyn, the stop in that direction was immediately in Monument Rd after crossing over Spring Hill the stop before that was outside the public toilets at the bottom of Warstone Lane.
