    Hudson's book shops

I knew Hudsons very well for a time. I was a Local college librarian & we bought all our books from them. I then moved on to Birmingham Public Libraries. Again, Hudsons had the contract to supply BHam Libraries with books & what a joy that was. Weekly visit to the Book Purchase Dept to look at...

    Birmingham ship light manufacturers

JOSEPH LUCAS: Copied from ELTA News: 1875 – The Ship’s Lamp After moving to Great King Street in Birmingham (Eventually the site of the famous Great King Street Factory); Lucas began producing its first lamp for ships called the “Tom Bowling”. A patent was applied for in 1875. The patent was...

    Moseley Letter Box

And don't forget that the occupant has a long history of ignoring planning permission & just going ahead. Incidentally what an ugly so called gate! Really enhances the street scene!

    Shenley Green Youth Centre

Hi Phil, bit off topic but I used to think of Green Meadow Road as in Shenley/Weoley Castle rather than Northfield?

    Holy Trinity Church Bordesley.

The burial ground was closed in 1873 although family graves continued to be used until 1925. Some remains were removed due to the widening of Sandy Lane/ Bordesley Middleway; and many gravestones were removed when the church was deconsecrated in the 1970s. The building was used as a hostel...

    The Kings Arms, Harborne.

The Kings Arms was renamed The Huntsman some years ago. Original building was burned down in about 2013 I think. Was it rebuilt? See also thread on The Huntsman. NB: just looked on Google - flats built on site, not sure when.

    Great Western Railway

Some would consider GWR means Gone with Regret. Always individualistic. From signals that drooped, a different track gauge [originally], and so on. They also produced as much as possible "in house". For me the GWR is the very epitome of steam at its best.

    Buildings at risk

Reminds me of earlier posts on this thread [137 etc]. Council indifference caused this. Whats the point of having "listed buildings" if BCC lacks the will to protect them. In even worse condition now - suspect "developer" is letting it rot away in the hope of demolishing & redeveloping site.

Where to find out how a street got its name?

Back in the 1980s [I think] I used to read the Ward Minutes for Harborne & these always reported new developments/street names. It seems that the developer can nominate the name. Checked on BCC web site & situation looks the same: "Developer are requested to provide suggestions for new road...

    Commonwealth Games, Birmingham 2022

Quote from Birmingham Live back in October - not sure if still the position: "However, leader of Birmingham City Council Ian Ward has warned that very few of the initial 1,500 homes will be turned into social or affordable housing. Speaking on a Commonwealth Games panel last week, he indicated...

    WW2 Harborne

I seem to remember that Harborne Library had a map showing where the bombs fell in Harborne - I think there were only a few. They also have information about the Harborne Home Guard and a few phots of bomb damage. Hope they still have them - it must be nearly 30 yrs since I was in there...

    Vyse Street Banksy art

Came across this on the bbc news website; banksy art in the Jewellery Quarter: sadly quickly vandalised.

    Stratford Road

Just a small point - The building now occupied by Sparkhill Library was build as Yardley Rural District Council offices; hence the name "council house" which name seems to have been passed down the generations. Sparkhill was historically part of Yardley Parish & later Yardley R.D.C.

Beechcroft House 15 Belle Walk Moseley

Beechcroft was the home of Alderman Henry J Sayer. He was a tinplate & metal merchant & a former Lord Mayor of Birmingham [1906 - 1907]. Henry was very involved in civic life & lived at Beechroft from about 1900 until possibly 1946 but not sure of that date. It was listed as a Mother & Baby...

    Colmore Depot Birmingham

My memories of the Colmore Depot were of the one in Hall Green. Bought my first car there - an Austin 1100. What a job driving home as I hadn't driven since I passed my test six months earlier.............

Ames, Stokes & Stevens Of Hanley Street

Hi Astonian, Just re-reading the Ames, Stokes & Stevens thread. I think we may be distantly related. My third great, great grandfather was John Wilden born in 1776. he had 5 children. Daughter Jane (1820-1893) married Joseph Stevens (1819-1887) from whom I am descended. Another daughter...
