    Henry Pooley & Sons

I was looking at a U Tube video of Dinorwic Quarry near Llanberis. High up in the quarry was a weighing machine made by Henry Pooley. Must be very old and possibly the highest ever Pooley weighing machine. Too high for me to even think of visiting!!

    A malady M'Lady

Another standby product when I was little - Vaseline. Still use it for all sorts of things often not what it was intended for eg oiling door hinges. It's the 150th year of production!

Manor Houses And Halls Of Greater Birmingham

Wake Green House, Moseley: Not really a manor house but important in the history of Moseley and Wake Green. This was a large country house on Wake Green Rd, Moseley between what is now Billesley Lane & St Agnes Rd. It dated back to at least the 18th Century but was demolished in 1903. It was the...

    Birmingham Priestley Riots

Just been reading this thread again. Poor old Priestley. After 14th July 1791 the rioters proceeded to Priestley's home, Fairhill at Sparkbrook, pillaged it and burnt it to the ground. Moseley Hall followed on 16 July. What isn't so well known is that after Joseph Priestley had made his escape...

    Swanshurst Park

My memory [possibly 50 yrs ago!] was that if you walked along the lake away from Yardley wood Rd, you came to a gate in a wooden fence & the 2nd golf course was through the gate. The red circle on the attached map from Streetmap gives an indication of where I am thinking of. Many years later...

    Swanshurst Park

Wasn't there another golf course in the park? I have a vague recollection of a more substantial course accessed through a gate at the very far end corner of the park.

Elan Valley and its Pipeline into Birmingham.

When our children were younger [about 25 yrs ago!] a favourite outing was to the Wyre Forest and through the Hawkbatch Valley and on to Seckley Wood and the viewing platform looking out over the river. The path crossed the Elan Valley pipeline at which there were three platforms with large metal...

    Street furniture

The iconic K6 red telephone was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V in 1935. Around 60,000 examples were installed across Britain, which is why the K6 has come to represent the red Telephone Box. Over 11,000 K6s remain...

    Street furniture

Well folks, it's the 140th anniversary [thank you google] of the birth of Sir Giles Scott. If you were a scouser like me you would know that he designed Liverpool Cathedral - a truly incredible building reflecting civic pride at its' best. More popular he designed the K2 Telephone Box in 1924...

Not what they used to be......

Yes I did! But it was about adulteration of food etc products in the Victorian/Edwardian period! Truly awful what manufacturers got away with. I though it it was clear from my original posts that I was taking about RECENT changes arising from takeovers by MULTI-NATIONALS of traditional...

Not what they used to be......

You are probably right about the size/inflation angle. But "health & safety" as a reason for changing ingredients on popular items when taken over? So HP sauce made in Aston was so dangerous that when a dutch company took it over they immediately changed it. And do you really think Andrews...

Good music to listen to on U Tube

Not what they used to be......

As well as a lot of good old products vanishing from the shelves, it disappoints me how many traditional products have been "bought" up by big companies and immediately altered for the worse. HP Sauce was never the same after taken over by the dutch - darker & doesn't taste the same. Brillo Pads...

    Moseley C Of E School

Came across this book on ebay. Fascinating history of the school until 1969 when it moved into the new building on Oxford Road. The origins of the school arose from meeting of the Freeholders in June 1827 when it was agreed "that it is expedient in the present state of this chapelry, that a...
