harry patch age 109 years old

Harry Patch age 109 I saw Harry on the TV a couple of days ago, and to me he represents all those brave young men who went to war. My own granddad was with the 15th Btn Royal Warwicks and he was also at the 3rd Battle of Ypres, (also known as Passchendaele). The conditions were truly awful, a...

    Charles Godfrey

Hi John, Thanks for looking, certainly Jane was the right age. Next time I get to the library, I'll see what I can find on Ancestry. I haven't found Charles's marriage on LDS yet, but I'll keep looking. Regards Spooner:)

    Charles Godfrey

Hi John, I would imagine that Charles Godfrey would have been in his forties in 1862. All I know about him is that he was 'father of the bride' - (Jane Godfrey), on the marriage cert for my Gt gt grandfather. She was 20 at the time, so that's all I know about him. They married at Handsworth...

    Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show

Anyone know when and where Buffalo Bill's second show was held in Birmingham? I know that it was in the very early 20th century. (The first show was in the 1880's.The thread on Bingley Hall made me wonder if it was there. My grandad told me that his mom took him to see the show when he was a boy.

    School visits to Cinemas

We went to see Moby Dick at the Adelphi in Coventry Road, Small Heath, from my school at Bierton Road, Yardley, back in the 1950's. It was quite a good walk. We had to walk in pairs, a long line of us, one teacher at the front leading, and another at the back making sure nobody went wandering...

    Triumph

Hi, The Mayflower was built in smaller numbers than the larger Renown. The Renown had a Standard Vanguard engine and they were built in Coventry. HJ Mulliner, the coachbuilders, in Small Heath. (Golden Hillock Road I think), were taken over by Standard, and I believe that was the only place...

    1969

Lambretta These pictures were taken in 1964 and show my 1961 Lambretta LD125. It was a bit of a rarity, because it was built in Paris, and its scarcity meant that even the most basic spares were sometimes hard to come by. When I got it, (paid £30 for it), the previuos owner had already...

    Thomas Piggs, Dealer

I have just received a marriage cert, where the bride's father, Thomas Piggs, is described as a dealer. The year was 1855, and the address of the couple is just given as Duddeston. The marriage took place at Aston Parish Church. I would like to find out what Thomas Piggs' dealership was, and...

    St Paul's Church Bordesley Green

I wonder whether anyone has a photo of St Paul's Church Bordesley Green as it was before the newer buildings were erected ? I was christened there (just after ww2), and that was probably the last time I saw that church until very recently. I had my camera with me especially and was disappointed...

    St Edburgha's Church Yardley

I believe that the marks were made from sharpening arrow heads, not swords. It was once the law that every able bodied young man had to practice archery, and that is why the English were so successful in the Battle of Agincourt. Many churchyards had yew trees. The yew wood made excellent...

    Prefabs

My earliest childhood memories are when we lived in a prefab in Lenton Croft, South Yardley, off Clay Lane, in the very early 1950s. Not only did they have indoor toilets, they had fridges too. For some reason we moved to the Hobmoor Road area, (Yew Tree end) before the coronation, but the...
