Midland Railway Carriage & Wagon Co

My Grandfather, Albert Hickinbotham, worked as a blacksmith at the Midland Carriage Works before WW2. His father, Fred, also worked there as a carpenter, making wooden railway carriages. I still have some of his woodworking tools.

Gabriels also made handrails for London Routemaster buses. During the early 1960s my family had a neighbour, Stan Hancock, who was the sole delivery driver for Gabriels and, during the school holidays, Stan used to take me and his son John with him during deliveries to places a distant as...

    Thornton Road Junior School

I went to Thornton Road from 1955 to 1959. I remember headmaster Mr Petherick quite well, as a tall and kind man. In my final, 4th, year I was in Mr Sinclair's class. Marsh Hill Boys Grammar Tech School

This photo shows a part of a full-page spread on the school in, what I think was, The Erdington News of June 9th 1961. For some reason my mother kept it all these years. The full headline says "Marsh Hill Offers a Wide Education". I was somewhere in the group shown attempting ballroom dancing...

You can see the lower half of the sculpture in the attached photo of the Marsh Hill staff taken in summer 1967.

Marsh Hill Boys Grammar Tech School

I also started at Marsh Hill in 1959. Form 1M with Mr Keatley (Head of French). Suspect you were in same form? I stayed through 6th form then went to Essex University. I recognise some of the guys in your rugby photo. Have attached a photo of a fell-walking group that I belonged to (I'm not in...
