    Alma Street Junior & Infants

Hi I attended Alma Street School. I started April 1959 aged 5 and left July 1965. The only photo I have seen of the school is the front of the building. Mr Hinchliffe was the Headmaster. We went to him to pass our books. If we passed, he would offer us 3 Roses Chocolates from a big tin. Even...

    Harry lucas school

Hi John I’m very sad to hear of Paul’s passing. I did correspond with him some years ago on Friends Reunited. I remember Paul from Alma Street School. He sat behind me in in class 12. The teacher was Mr Wildman. I recall Paul being a very polite, quiet boy. He always looked smart in his school...

    fish and chip shops

Hi I remember a chip shop on Potters Lane (although we called it Potters Hill) just up from the Bartons Arms. The lady there had immaculate reddish hair. It was styled in a pleat at the back. I recall her being well groomed wearing lipstick, she wasn’t very tall. My mom enjoyed the fish and...

    fish and chip shops

Hi I didn’t know his name was Taffy but I know he was a lovely man. If the chips were not quite ready to be served he would place a big fat chip on the counter and say, have that while you are waiting. It would taste so good. How nice was that? They certainly wouldn’t do that today! Regards Linda

    Wrensons shops

Hi Re; the chap that cut himself has, reminded me of something my Nan once said. They’re not a good butcher unless they’ve lost a finger! Ha ha. Not sure if that’s true or not but George the butcher on Hartley Road Kingstanding had lost one of his fingers! Thanks for prompting my memory...

    Wrensons shops

Hi I loved the aroma that permeated the air in Wrensons. Masons had the same aroma too. I used go with my Nan to the shop on Kings Road / Finchley Road Kingstanding. Sugar would be weighed and put into a dark blue paper bag. Such happy memories of being with my Nan, she was so lovely! Regards Linda

    Teeth out at the clinic

Hi The dentist or nurse with the red hair was indeed very rough and spiteful. It was a terrifying experience and has stayed with me all my life. Mind you I got my own back on her as I did kick her in the chops when she was trying to hold my legs down! It was horrendous. Then after the...

    Teeth out at the clinic

Hi Re; the code you speak of, it was a capital D! I remember it well. It was for an extraction. Albert Road Clinic is responsible for frightening a whole generation of Astonian’s to fear the dentist! Regards Linda

    RTP Potato Crisps

My dad loved pigs tail stew too (hairs an all)! My mom preferred chitterlings and hodge as do I. Mom would send me to a shop on Wheelers Street Lozells most Thursday tea times for the hot just cooked delicacy. I recall having to be at the shop pretty prompt as they sold out very quickly. On my...

    RTP Potato Crisps

Hi Ha ha ha you’ve just made me laugh out loud re; hairs on scratchings. My dad would say the hairs won’t hurt you. He also said the hair on pigs feet wouldn’t hurt you either. As much as I loved the scratchings and pigs feet I wouldn’t eat the hairy ones! Happy days Linda

Hi there, Yes I remember the crisps very well. They were delicious very tasty indeed! Your uncle Horace must have supplied them to Alma Street School because that is where I remember them from. We had a biscuit lady called Mrs Hands who would come into the classrooms just before the morning...
