    Rocky Lane Perry Barr

    The only shops i can remember on Rocky Lane were at the top by the roundabout and at the bottom on the Walsall road opposite the Crematorium. There was a Paynes shoe repairers a newsagents and a cycle shop plus some others which I can‘t remember at the bottom but never used the top shops.

    There were antiaircraft gun sites at Perry Hall as well as Perry Barr parks. My Mother told me about the damage to our house roof in Dewsbury grove which was caused by the guns, presumably due to the falling shrapnel.

    I helped the Handsworth Dairies milk man late fifties until they banned young helpers. Best part was helping to steer using the big triangular steering device, can‘t call it a wheel.

    The Church in Rocky Lane was on the corner of Rocky Lane and Dorrington road, I walked past every School day from Dewsbury Grove to Dorrington road Schools from 1950 to1957.

    Had a Troll that I bought from Ludlow that I hung from my cars interior mirror mid sixties, think it was supposed to give you good luck, must have worked as I’m still here.

    Late fifties had a paper round from Townsend and Denett (post office) next door to the Tennis Courts pub and my delivery area was around Pendragon, Cliveden and Glendower.

    That would be Perry Avenue, I lived first grove on the right after you crossed over the Walsall road but moved September 70.

    The bridge over the canal at Tower Hill was similar but wider if I remember correctly.

    Had a Customs officer where I worked in Kingsbury called Funnell pronounced Fernell, just out of interest.

    I never realised that the land for the prefabs on the Walsall road opposite Perry avenue was leased from the parks department, stands to reason though as it’s on the borders of Perry Barr park.

    I remember buying my first shotgun from one of the catalogs that many people had, would have been mid sixties, no certificate required in those days. Also had a .303 bored out to 410 but the local police would ask to check it was a shotgun if they saw you with it, always took the bolt out...

    What flyers they were. Used to travel from Weoley Castle into town and was usually the only passenger, it was like ring that bell and go like hell.
