    Canals of Birmingham

For those of you who enjoyed Fawlty Towers, Prunella Scales (Sybil Fawlty) and her husband, Timothy West, did a series called Great Canal Journeys. Here are several links which may bring you to the one featuring Birmingham, "Birmingham to Braunston"...

    OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

Location is important. Consider how many corner shops are known, not by their actual name, but as "the corner shop". I have never heard anyone refer to a "middle of the block shop". : )

    Canals of Birmingham

The first known canals were built in Mesopotamia around 4000 BC. Human nature being what it is, they probably tipped chariot wheels, kitchen hearths, clay pots, wheelie bins, pallets, and whatever they used for traffic cones into their canals.

    Harvo Malt Bread

I found this from Birmingham Museums Trust: Hovis' managing director giving a pep talk to staff, 1935.

    Coal Merchant

Have no experience of coal merchants, or coal, for that matter. But when I visited Gotham in South Notts, one December, circa 1985, the very characteristic odour of coal hung in the streets everywhere. No back-to-backs, but stayed with an uncle in a two-up-two-down-with-privy-out-the-back, and...

    Harvo Malt Bread

I never had Harvo, but I do remember my Mum buying Hovis Bread, which is made by RHM. They also make a few other items I remember, and still use myself: Atora suet, Bisto gravy browning, Robertson's marmelade, and Sharwood's curry powder and chutney. Can't seem to get Hovis anymore, am trying...

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

Morturn, just checked out your website. Very interesting! Like the explanation of public history/historian vs. academic history/historian. Nice painting of a back-to-back as well!

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

Was not able to find one. Frustrating, I know. Only way round it is to use a VPN.

    Whites Removals

Not really. A member had posted about a book on Brum, in regard to White's, and where to order it, and a minor discussion followed on actually getting hold of old or out-of-print books.

    Restaurants In Birmingham 1960s

"In Birmingham, the first Chinese restaurants were established in the late 1950s, Tung Kong on Holloway Head, Kam Ling on Livery Street, and Tung Hing at 15 Snow Hill. One of the earliest Chinese settlers in Birmingham, Mr John Wong, recalled the rapid development of Chinese restaurants in the...

    Whites Removals

I hope they don't. It is frustrating to find access to old books. I understand copyright and protecting the author, but some books out of print (not just in regard to Birmingham, but any subject) are stashed away on internet archives or digital libraries, and you can't get to them. I was...

How to I find old street maps?

A good source for old maps is the National Library of Scotland. ( nls.uk ) Unfortunately, not too easy to use, you really have to play around with it to find the area and year and type of map you are looking for. I succeeded, but only after much clicking and swearing.
