    Royal visits to Birmingham

Great thread Two, thanks! They really went to a lot of trouble. I googled to see if there was any more info on the visit and found some of the postcards are on ebay! Love the tram, my maternal granddad was on the trams. Also interested in the bedstead makers arch as one of my Gt Granddads...

    Origins of the Brummie accent

I've been told I still have my Coventry accent after 41 years over here in West OZ! I think it has softened a bit especially the hard vowels, when I hear myself on the answering machine I still sound like I come from the Midlands. I use Aussie slang & local terms for things but a few old sayings...

Yum! I was wondering if anyone has a photo of Glovers Rd Small Heath before it was demolished in the 70's. Some of my family lived at number 55 for a long time. Thanks

    Origins of the Brummie accent

I've always been facinated by English accents, especially how they could change within a space of 5 -10 miles. When we came over to Australia we found the Aussie accent was much the same all over Australia. There are certain regional words and folk from the "outback" had a stronger "strine" but...

    Royal Warwickshire Regiment WW1

Thank you for your reply Alan, I thought maybe he was in the army before the war broke out. I think he was wounded a couple of times and also affected by gas, he must have had the constitution of an ox! My info is about 4th hand, passed on through the family so not often acurate! Dick would...

    Royal Warwickshire Regiment WW1

Hi there,I was wondering Alan if you could find anything more about my great Uncle, Private Richard Jones 2281 he was in the 14 bn RWR. He died on 14th April 1918 in France, he was a stretcher bearer. I was wondering if it was possible to find out when he enlisted, on his medal cards it says...

Who remembers their dad mending their shoes

Our Dad mended our shoes too, I'd forgotten about that! The 3 footed last was used as a door-stop for years, I always thought it was from the Isle of Man when I was little! LOL!

    Cecil Walker Hampshire Regiment

If it's any help my great uncle, born in Birmingham, started off in the 17th Btn Royal Warwickshire Regiment and transferred to the 1st garrison btn of the Hampshire Regiment. a friend who has a great interest in the Pals regiments thought the reason could have been that the 17th R Warks weren't...

    sayings

Hi Nico, I was from Radford, a very long time ago! Sorry I meant to say from the French verb donner - to give. It's really sad all these old sayings are being replaced by boring mid-Atlantic twoddle! The same has happened in OZ, they used to have such colourful sayings but they have almost...

    sayings

Growing up as a Coventry Kid if I had my hands in my pockets my Dad, a Brummie, would say I had my Brumagem gloves on or that I had my elbows in my pockets. He used to call Brum the Holey City, more holey than righteous, because of all the manholes in the streets I think. He'd call sausage and...

Book: Birmingham; sinister side by Steve Jones

I have this book and as you say it really opens your eyes as to what it was like especially in Summer Lane. I've gone back to this useful little book often over the 9 or so years I've had it.

    Housing : Living conditions

I remember reading books, of the Catherine Cookson type where children were sewn into their clothes - with newspaper in between layers for warmth - for the winter. Until the mid 1960's I think a bath a week was the normal thing, with a strip-wash every day. When I was a teenager ('66 - '71) I...

    Ancestry or findmypast

I use Ancestry, I only have the basic UK membership which is good for the most part. Happily for me the local library (down under) has the full membership of both Ancestry and Find my Past so when I do a search that brings up records I'm not able to see I make a note and find it at the library...
