    High Street Deritend Digbeth

Hi Astonian, The most up-to-date Kelly's I have access to is 1940 and the only pub I can find with a similar name to the one you mentioned is the "Forge Tavern" which was 230 Fazeley Street and it was run by Wilfred Watters (this is how it is spelt in the directory) Hopefully someone else will...

    High Street Deritend Digbeth

Hi Dennis, This photo has been driving me round the hat rack all evening and I've come to the conclusion that the caption is wrong. I don't believe that the dome mentioned belongs to the Institute. I believe it belongs to the building which stood on the corner of Oxford Street as shown in your...

    jelf William and elsie

Re: William and elsie jelf Hi Astonian, Sorry if the way I wrote the post caused some confusion. The Birth records were recorded with the childrens mothers maiden name included from around 1911, which is why I included the Goldby/Goldley names. The names werent always transcribed properly...

    jelf William and elsie

Re: William and elsie jelf Hi Astonian, The Birth records match with ladylinda's findings, although Elsie's surname has been transcribed differently at times. Marriage: William Jelf to Elsie M Goldbey, 1923, 3rd quarter, Aston, Volume 6d 1138 Births: William, 1924, 3rd quarter, Aston, Vol...

    jelf William and elsie

Re: William and elsie jelf Hi Astonian, I don't have access to the Electoral Rolls but in Kelly's Directory for 1940, there is a William Jelf, coffee rooms listed and it was on the corner of Villiers Street, with a Congregational Church on the opposite side of the road. It looks to be the...

    Old street pics..

Hi Paul, I've had a good look in various places for information about the college but have found nothing I'm afraid. I was wondering if it may have been attached to the actual Police Station itself ?? and also if the Police Museum may be able to help you although there doesn't appear to be a...

    Old street pics..

Hi Maris, it will be interesting to see the result you get when you get chance to go. I really like the then and now photos that are done. You probably gathered that I did that photo from a screen shot of google maps, so it limits the angles a bit.

Lickey - Beacon Hill Toposcope - Request for help

Hi Adrian, It has been many, many years since I played "up The Lickeys" as a child, but the structure that I see on photos now, is not how I remember it. I have also spoken to my Mom and Uncle who were born in Rubery (My Uncle still lives at "The bottom of The Lickeys") Mom, who again hasnt been...

    Old street pics..

Maris, I believe the photograph was taken with the corner of Mill Lane in the foreground and where the lorry is turning on the opposite side is Oxford Street so I would think it would be the coach station.

    Decimalisation In 1971

Hi Bernard, I don't remember the strike but I was only 12 so it wouldn't have affected me really, but I have always believed Decimal Day to have been on the 15th February..my Brother's birthday..?? Lynne

    Midland Red Around Birmingham.

As children, my brother and I would go with our Mom, once a fortnight, to Nan and Grandads. We would get the cream and blue 60 or 58 from the Wheatsheaf, Sheldon to St Martins...walk through the indoor market, where Mom would pick up Smoked Haddock for our tea and a few essentials for Nan and...
