    Edmund Street

Barlows was the shop on the corner of Edmund and Barwick Street. I worked in the building next door. I couldn't remember the name. Just to the right of the shop was the entrance to the back of 120, where I worked. Also the garage where the caretaker kept his car. Good to know that the...

    Shops Owned By Retired Footballers

Someone way back mentioned Johnny Watts having a newsagents shop in Adderley Road. I went to school with his daughter, Julie Watts.

    Holidays of the past

My dad was born in Rhyl, along with his sisters and his family had lived there since about 1860. His grandfather used to have a shooting gallery on the beach which used real ammunition! Dad worked at the Marine Lake fairground in the 1930's, sadly that isn't there anylonger, just a big piece...

    Smiths Industries

I worked for a very short time at Smith's in the offices (didn't like it much). I lived just up the road in a cottage owned by M&B brewery, who also owned the pub on the corner next to the cottages. The pub and cottages were also demolished for road widening, as was the large hardware business...

    Alum Rock Road Shops

I remember going to that dentist when I was a child. What a terrible experience. I remember it well - that big old leather chair, the gas mask, the blood. I lived in Ash Road so Mom and I could walk, but I never went there again, I put up with tooth ache until I was 16 years old and found a...

    Harborne

Does anyone remember Eddie Matthews who used to play at the Junction every week. He played the trumpet and his band was called the Jump Band. This would have been in the late 1960's probably.

    Caldicott William Ernest

Although Caldicott is s good name you will probably find that it has been spelt quite differently in places. (I live in Caldecote!) It is a matter of trawling through everything until you match something up. If I get stuck and can't find someone I will look at future census returns for the...

    Caldicott William Ernest

If you look for hints I presume you are using Ancestry. Just to let you know that you don't get everything hinted. I always do a separate search too (search all records) and often find other entries not included in the hints.

    Caldicott William Ernest

I have just found your gr. grandfather on the 1939 Register living at 2/51 Ryland Street. I think it may mean 2 back of 51. There is a Florence and a Doris too but the other entries are closed.

    Caldicott William Ernest

What do you mean by a very Great Grandfather? Do you mean James was your great grandfather's father. So James - William - William Ernest. Have you got access to census returns? I had an Aunty Peggy, her name was Margaret!

    Caldicott William Ernest

You probably already know that your Gt. grandfather was William Caldicott who married Mary H Vaughan in Birmingham in 1919. There are 11 children's birth registration in Birmingham with mother's maiden name as Vaughan. Dates range from 1920 (William Ernest) to 1941 (Sheila). Do you know if...

    General Hospital Birmingham

Do you have his death certificate? There are a lot of James Scraggs showing on Ancestry. Do you want any other information, if so do you know his date of birth, or parent's names?

    Marston Green & Tile Cross

We lived in Saltley and used to go to Marston Green (out to the country) on Sunday afternoon in the Summer. We would get the number 14 bus to the terminus. There used to be a Mynah Bird in a cage on the other side of the road and it used to screech and shout if anyone passed the house. We...

    Church Road, Yardley.

Susan D - I printed out your posts and sent to mother in law (Margaret Dawkins). She was thrilled to read what your remembered. She is now 90 years old and as she has been in Yardley all her life and having the paper shop, remembers everyone you mentioned and can give names and addresses of...

    Church Road, Yardley.

Forgot to say that if it is The Shubbery, you wondered who may have lived there. Well I have looked at census returns and compiled as much as I can, a family tree, I cannot remember the name just now, but I do remember that the Head of the house was a Stationer. ]

    Church Road, Yardley.

Susan D - I think the house you mentioned is still there! It was called The Shrubbery. If you go up Newcroft it is on the left. Unfortunately the front has changed a lot. When we visit MIL we park over the road at the back of the place. I still have reels of cotton I bought from Woolworths...

    Church Road, Yardley.

Susan I was interested to read your post on Church Road. My mother in law is the daughter you mention who was the daughter of the newsagent at 212. He bought a house on the corner of Blakemere Avenue and Church Road. Margaret (Mother in Law) married and moved to Newcroft Grove (where she...

    Teeth out at the clinic

I remember going to the School Clinic in Sheep Street. I don't remember a lot about the actual procedure but I do remember afterwards being put in a room with a row of small enamel sinks, each one with a child leaning over spitting! What a terrible experience. Next came the dentist in Alum...
