I can't remember off hand. I am in North Wales atvthe moment for my wife's second cousin's 100th birthday party. When I get home next week I will have a look through my family photos. I am sure I have one of the Shaw's. It was my sister Rene who was a Shaw family friend

    18 Highcroft Road

I had several friends who worked there as nurses in the late fifties early sixties. I never visited there myself but did socialise with many of the staff. This is my personal view but I feel that although it called itself a mental hospital, I feel it was still a mental asylum. I am sad to say...

    hockley bus station devastated

I knew about this event but only in recent years. I regret not knowing about it when I was a lad as I could have asked my dad about it. He was a bus driver, based there since the twenties and I wasn't born till the year after it happened.

John has a great site. What is quite strange is we seem to be neighbours. We must have crossed paths in Morrisons and other places many a time

    Roy Holder Brummie Actor

Amazing; we always got on with David Turner at school. He was young and so related to our generation. He wrote and read short stories on the radio at the time but was very shy about it. We did have a cheeky nickname for him though. We called him Isaiah, (according to us) he had one eye higher...

    Roy Holder Brummie Actor

In the early sixties I saw a play on the television that may have been Roy's first appearance. It was The Train Set by David Turner. (David Turner was a well known playwright at the time who upset Mary Whitehouse. He had also been my English teacher at school). If it is the play I think it was...

    Birmingham in 1950s

Nico, post #469. The table cloth would most likely have been oil cloth. Similar to lino but much thinner. A fabric like canvas treated with something like linseed oil

    The Boys Brigade

I have only been able to find one other photo that could be from Denmark but no sign of my brother there. However, I have found him in a 1939 group photo, bellow. He is in the back row, second from the left side of the photo. He would be 15 then. I am not sure how long he remained in the BB. He...

Interesting to see these Rob. My brother was in the BB in the 30s and went to Denmark with them. There is a photo of a Denmark camp at that link but it is much later in 1952. Here is a photo of my brother mid to late 1930s
