    Gosta Green Through Duddeston

pmc1947 I remember the Holbrooks factory walls in the same state as you describe, me and my mates occasionally played in there. I seem to remember sewers or tunnels with steps going down to them. All quite dangerous but then we were kids who thought nothing of playing on bomb pecks and in...

    Comet pub Hodge Hill

I lived in Collingbourne Avenue for a time in the late 60s. The Birmingham racecourse occupied what was to become the Bromford Bridge estate until it closed in the mid-sixties. It was a nice area. At the top of the road near Bromford Road the Blues (and later Villa) player Geoff Vowden lived...

    Bordesley Green Grammar Technical School

As a post script to my last message I forgot one of the worst teachers for 'abuse'. He was 'Nunky' Thompson a strange looking man with a high forehead and eyes that seemed to be at odds with each other, he looked more like a mad scientist. His forte was slapping boys across the face!!! Not...

    Bordesley Green Grammar Technical School

About half my junior school class passed the 11+ exam but luckily for them, nobody chose BGTS. So when I started at my third choice school, I knew no one. I had to take two buses to get there and I regret passing that bloody exam! I wish I'd gone to the local secondary modern just a short...

    Birmingham buses

Small world! While on holiday last month in Mexico this (presumably) ex-London bus was parked just off the main road looking very sad. Does anyone know more about it? I have more pics if anyone wants any.

coerl21. The PE teacher who was running-in a set of false teeth was Mr Lunn. He wore a white coat and looked more like an ice-cream seller. He certainly couldn't run, his legs worked as poorly as his teeth. The third French teacher was Mr Burbridge who joined in 1960. What an ***hole he was...

    Gosta Green Through Duddeston

Thanks to dereklcg (#768) and pmc1947 (#770) for the great pics!!! In the areal shot I can clearly see whereabouts my old house was in Godwin Street as my dad had the only garden in the area on the waste land (bomb peck) in front of the terraced house, 4 back of 65, previously known as 4 Godwin...

Sparky. I know your post was some time back but #3 teacher is 'Nunky' Thompson who joined the school for the 1960/61 year, the final year of the old head' Mr Brown. I started there that year and he was my form teacher and one of several nutters at BGTS who would be arrested these days for...

    Lewis's Department Store

Nursesue, Reddington's moved to Cannon Street into the old Kay Westworth's music shop. Then they moved again in more recent times to the building opposite Digbeth police station.........a strange move as there was no place to park. Finally, closed altogether. As Jennyann says he's online.

St Matthews school, Duddeston (Nechells) Newbie!

Hi cabman2/elizabeth1 & GER22VAN. Sorry don't remember the teachers names. I was there in the mid-50s, at the old original school. Following the 'slum' clearance a new school was built and as far as I know carried the same name. The Lister Square pic only shows a fraction of St Matthews in the...

    Help with absent voter please.

Colin B. As I suspected Colin I don't think I'll order a copy. Really wanted to know the regiment etc and you've provided that info for me. Thanks for your time and patience it's appreciated.

    Help with absent voter please.

Colin B. Many thanks for that. I've never ordered anything from that site, is it worth it? Do they give a lot of details of the soldier or is it just a formal document?

    Help with absent voter please.

I've found a relative on the absent voter list of 1918 and I don't understand the associated acronyms: "Driver 5th A. Aux, A.S.C." Can anyone decipher that please?
