    Wired Flower Pot Holder Seller

Hi GG Jean Looks like my memory might have been playing little tricks with me - unless the picture is even somewhere else??!! But anyway, hope you were interested to learn that she was not a "flower" seller but a "wire flower pot holder" seller. I imagine it was a little "home industry"...

    Wired Flower Pot Holder Seller

I am sure this photo is somewhere in this forum - and someone wrote "I wish I knew what she is selling". Well I went to the Birmingham Seen exhibition for the second time today - and this photo is included in the exhibition - and it has a title/description. She is actually selling wire flower...

    the cedar club

Does anyone know exactly when the Cedar Club closed. I am guessing it was early 1980's as that is the only time I went there and it was in a shocking state. I went to see a band who were on the fringe of the punk scene and took along a girl who would have been more at home in one of the city...

    Pop - Drink

What about the 3d deposit that used to be charged on pop bottles? I grew up in a seaside town and for us kids it was a little industry - just one of several - hunting down the empty bottles that holidaymakers had left on the beach or in the rubbish bins. Some of the shopkeepers would cough up...

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

John Thanks very much for that. I have Photoshop so I'll have a go myself. If I completely mess up I'll take you up on your kind offer. Dave According to Wikipedia some more of Ganges timbers used in constructing Burgh Island Hotel. (Sorry can't make Link work - but just search on HMS...

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

John Can you tell me what tool/technique you used to do the tinting. I would like to get that effect on a photo of the war memorial in our local park. Dave Any idea where that house is? Thanks both T

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

Wendy Don't feel too bad. You can start counting down the days to next year's Trafalgar Day ceremony. Knowing Stephen and the other folks involved it will be even bigger and better than this year. And be sure to get along to the Wellington afterwards. Somewhere I have got an artist's...

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

Stern view as she is now. Back to original name - Trincomalee - and fully restored - up at Hartlepool. Sad to say I have never been to Hartlepool since the refurbishment was completed. T

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

Dave I am quite certain that it is. You can see the similarity here. I saw this little brochure for sale a couple of years ago - decided to buy it as a souvenir of that short time I had scudding (or other such nautical terminology) around Portsmouth Harbour and across to the Isle of Wight...

    B'ham's WW1 Presentation Tank

Sorry - still no picture of the Birmingham tank but they definitely were donated to, and displayed, in many towns. Below is one in Windsor. Doubtless the Birmingham one would have looked similar. T

Dave/Chocks2/Frothblower - I think I spotted you guys on one of the Birmingham Mail photos. Go here: https://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-videos-pictures/birmingham-picture-galleries/ Click on the Trafalgar Day parade link and scroll through and see if I am right! T

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

I don't know why it is - but every time I look at the above picture of the statue my eye is drawn to the character on the far left. Would love to know how he spent his days! Looks a bit of a chancer to me!! T

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

Dave - well spotted! And at the other end you can see where they have been drilled for the gas supply to feed in. But things aren't that straightforward - how could they be! When the statue was erected there was no gas supply anywhere near the Bull ring. So I believe that for the first 10...

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

You can see here how the cannon were used as the bases of the lamp posts. The navy sold off thousands of these cannon - and many were used as bollards. A lot of modern bollards look almost the same - so another example of something from the navy crossing over into civilian life. T

    B'ham's WW1 Presentation Tank

Terry I only learned recently that most (90%?) of the tanks in active service in WWI were built at Oldbury Carriage Works. Amazing picture here: So if Birmingham DID have a tank most likely it originated at Oldbury. Oldbury Carriage Works was part of the Metropolitan group - later...

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

Something I mean to follow up one day. I was told that the shop front of Liberty's store in London - likewise - made of timber from one of the old sailing ships. I really love this stuff! T

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

I was saying in the pub that Nelson's ship Foudroyant was saved from the breaker's yard - refurbished - and then wrecked in a storm off Blackpool. How ironic is that. This is how she looked stranded on Blackpool Beach (1896) Dave - was it you saying how the timber from the old ships was...

    Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

Have to agree with that. I think the parade up New Street is really good. Always tickles me to be right up the other end of New Street and see the look on people's faces (especially the children) when they first hear the band!! T

Just got back from Birmingham. Have to say - another exemplary piece of organisation by Stephen Hartland. Well done!! And we managed to get a quorum in The Wellington afterwards which was excellent. Hope I didn't bore you guys too much with the Nelson anecdotes - but it was great to swap...
