    The Spitfire

There were 3 at least of these T28 aeroplanes flying. They were after WW2 and were pre-jet trainers. I think they were very beautiful and admired them very much. Can be privately owned and I think this one was...ohh to be a flier...and have a spare 400Gs. Beautifully prepared. Tandem 2 seat and...

    The Spitfire

The Corsair. There were reasons for it's shape and it had enough horsepower to make it very fast. Carrier based.

    The Spitfire

The P40 Kittyhawk. Not widely used in Europe but did stirling duty against the Zero's in China during the early years of war with Japan. Better known as being the aeroplane of the Flying Tigers...with a sharks mouth and teeth on the engine cowling.

    The Spitfire

The Lancaster...what can you say...still flies and bl..dy well.

    The Spitfire

The Firefly. Not remembered so much perhaps but a beautiful flying machine.

    The Spitfire

The PBY is such a gracefull aeroplane. It looks at home on the ground but probably should always be flying. Many more to follow if it is allright to post here.

A PBY taxiing after landing with the Lanc taking off in the background.

    The Spitfire

The Hurricane. A late arrival but managed to get a photo before going home. Not many left now that fly and one was lost to a fire a few years ago.

Hopefully this picture will post. Taken last weekend with a dinky little camera that was hard to use. So don't expect too much.

    Rivers : River Rea

Ok Speedwing I can't seem to expand your picture. Anyway thanks for replying; I was hoping that you would. Below hopefully is a blow-up of the area in question. The frontage in question is to the right of the large chimney and seems to be remarkably similar to the frontage on Westleys...

    Rivers : River Rea

Speedwings post #83 raised a point that the remains of Coopers Mill and house might be on the council car park which seemed questionable at the time. Well, everything seemed to tie it to modern day Lower Fazely Street....it just seemed so right, to me anyway. Maybe it still is correct but, as we...

    New Birmingham library plans

Jumpers will get their bracers caught in the rings...kind of like a bungie sproing. Ah the past and what of it. The library or any building will grow into it's space and the landscape will become familiar and 'like it' or 'not so' will become again the old norm which was ever so. As long as it...

    Old street pics..

Post #3034, an interesting question. If the mall was a cluster of stores with no architectural charachter in an open mall; then probably we would prefer the old more people friendly street shops and street landascape. There is much to like about being in an enclosed shopping centre in the winter...

    Old street pics..

Yeah, whenever I think of Highfield Road, I think of looking along it towards the top of the Rock from Wavel I think. Or from the top of the Rock in the other direction so never from that spot. Although I used to go along Malthouse to school occasionally and had a friend who lived at the outdoor...

    Old street pics..

Yep, looking at that I am sure you guys have it right. It just looked too sharp a curve to me in the old photo but not so. Funny now, the old photo has more of a feel of Highfield now, after comparing, than Google does. Yeah...Malthouse Lane and the houses on the immediate right were larger ones...

    Old street pics..

I went to Leigh Rd, too, around the same time and knew Highfield Road up as far as the top of the Rock anyway and I can't for the life of me remember that bend. Highfield was a straight road except for a bend over the railway bridge just before Washwood Heath and I don't think this is it. So...

    Old street pics..

Re. post #2922, Thanks for that Berniw. There are a few others taken from that same window in different years. There is another..a painting of the same (I believe) Guide Post from the actual Green in earlier years. Might be on here somewhere or deleted. Maybe I can find it.

    Old street pics..

I think the library was built on the Green. The Guide Post must have been moved further south a bit at the point of the then new triangle. Maybe there was a bit of grass inside the triangle...a smaller version of what used to be...

Have not seen the last photo before. Very fine indeed. Another view also of a cabbies shelter in the road...they must have been plentyfull at one time.

The picture of High St. Saltley did not change much from then untill the sixties anyway. But now it's all gone.
