Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

That picture of an engineer climbing up a frame reminds me of the time I spent in Sheldon and all that yellow cloth i put on a special tool to clean contacts. I was a Y3YC but GPO didnt like me and I didn't like them at age 16 to 18. Can anyone remind me of staff that worked there, supervisor...

The Bowling Green At St Bernard's Grange, Sheldon

Thats a term that you don't hear much now "outdoor". I happened to be in the company of a group of Irish people recently and I used "outdoor" to describe the business my grandmother ran in Witton. They had not heard of that expression.

The Bowling Green At St Bernard's Grange, Sheldon

I remember going there usually in the summer with my parents. I lived off Garretts Green Lane and walked to the "grange" many times. I remember there was a grassed area that we could play on and there was a huge tree in the middle. At each corner of the lawn was a clump of trees that you could...

    Sad Times (2nd Class City)

I think dropping out of the premier is the least of villa's worries. They are losing £70,000 a day, yes thats right, a day. I think going into administration might be a serious threat. Upsetting Martin O'Neil was a big mistake, look at the results since and players moved on.

February 2013 edition Story of Ashted

I believe my mother, aunt, grandparents lived at the turks head during WW2 and must have endured bombing. I have often wondered how serious the bombing near there would have been.

Thanks for map showing petrol station and location of Turks Head. I didn't realise how close I was, as you said. In fact I worked at Southalls Alum Rock for many years and used the 14/55 bus from city centre. Didnt realise Bloomsbury street was just off the bus route.

thanks Phil. Although I went to Ashted probably hundreds of times when I was young I have no idea where anywhere was. In fact whilst still at school I worked some evenings at Ashted Service station near the viaduct but I dont know where that was in relation to Bloomsbury St.
