    Rootes Birmingham

Yes I remember the data preparation department at Rootes. Large department of ladies on the top floor of the Computer block all producing cards and paper tape. This is another occupation that has disappeared and good riddance to it. Must have been boring. The Computer there had one disc drive...

Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

Re: Birmingham History When I worked for GPO in the 60's I installed Party Lines. There was a metal earthing rod put into the garden outside the house to make up the circuit. If there was ever a problem one solution was to put a bucket of water over it to improve the connection.

birmingham corporation bus clock in for drivers

Same here, we lived in Sheldon so had to go to the Yew Tree and then number 11 to Billesley. I actually hated the pantomimes but made to go. Last time I remember going to the Stadium was early 80's when my father retired and held a party there.

birmingham corporation bus clock in for drivers

My father worked at all BCT garages as a plumber. I believe the summer parties were held at the BCT Stadium in Billesley which I think is still there. I remember going to lots of them and the christmas parties at Perry Barr Garage. We also went on day trips sometimes using a single decker.

I always believed that the Swan Yardley had the longest bar in Europe around 1970.

    Whisky A Go Go

When I knew Sean he lived near the Yew Tree Yardley, saw him in there quite a lot. I think he lived off Hob Moor Rd.

    Whisky A Go Go

I knew Sean O'Mahoney very well in late 60's and to mid 70's. I was very good friends and work colleague with Noel Barnes who is also mentioned in the Whisky a Go Go thread. I spent many a lunchtime in the Brookhill Alum Rock with Noel, Sean and their friends that dropped in, all characters. I...

    Libraries Under Threat

Jayell, I think you just it the nail on the head. The subject of this post is "Libraries under threat", as you say, the number of people has decreased, maybe through technology. That will increase, so why do we need all those big buildings. Also, what about all the trees that are need for books...

    Libraries Under Threat

I didn't say books will cease to exist, just that reading habits will change. Maybe not for everyone but probably enough to mean the old library system has to change. By the way sospiri, I also worked on a LEO computer, 1967 at Southalls Alum Rock. Now back to reading Sunday papers on my Kindle.

    Libraries Under Threat

Why are we trying to save paper books? I use a Kindle and would not consider reading a novel again except on it. I believe certain books will survive e.g Atlases as I prefer looking at maps that way. Authors will still write but output will be digital. I find it so convenient to carry a small...

    Sheldon Bombing

So where we saying Tiger Island is, where the Wagon and Horses were or by Arden Oak?

    Sheldon Bombing

I might be wrong but I always believed Tigers Island was where the Coventry Road split. There was a petrol station at both ends and The Wagon and Horses public house. When I worked for GPO telephones around 1966 I was based at Lyndon repeater which was on the left hand side of the island when...

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I believe several Co-op shops had function rooms, certainly the one in Yardley did. They ran a "disco" around 1967 called Rainbow club. Bit amateur but somewhere to go.
