    Ionic Plating Works

Hi Brian, I see you were at Ionic from 1967-70, so I’m assuming you would have known my dad, Tom Flynn, who started there in the late 50’s. He sadly died in 1972, by which time he had become Works Director at the plant. If you have any memories of him at all and don’t mind sharing them, I’d...

    Acocks Green Station

(mis)spent a lot of my youth on this station with my mate from primary school Phil, just messing about, putting pennies on the tracks, watching trains come and go…

A maternity home in Acocks Green

Our family lived directly opposite the Christadelphian in the 60’s & 70’s and it was where we all grew up…remember this place very well…

    Brief encounter in Temple Row

Can anyone help? I’m trying to locate a photo that I saw in the forums somewhere just recently, of a couple meeting at the edge of st Philips churchyard and Temple Row, next to a lamp post. It’s a b/w photo which looks like it was shot in the 50’s, in ‘noir’ style. Some people commented that...

    Co-op and "The Tunnel"

This is a photo of the tunnel link from the Big top side to the main building. The showcases used to display gardening products in the spring / summer then household electrical and appliances in autumn/ winter. When you went up the steps at the end, you could either enter the restaurant or go...

Yes I remember him…he worked in the basement area on the Big Top site, in the gardening / tools department.

Thanks Freddy, as it’s from 1957, maybe it was an earlier office he occupied in the building in the photo, I’m not sure. Pity there’s no pics of the main Ionic building. Great info though, thanks for that Frank

No problem Freddy, glad it’s how you remember him. I’ve always assumed this office was in the building in the picture in grove street - would you know if that’s right? thanks Frank

No I think the road to the right is Grove street and the left one with the cyclist is a continuation of Grove lane, (it’s a dead end a bit further on). Halberton st is off Grove lane and comes out further down in Grove street - see google maps

    Ionic Plating Works

Hi David, I’m really not sure of the date, tho maybe late 50’s early 60’s judging by the car on the left. I do have some colour pics taken not long before it was demolished for the new hospital build. If I’d known when that was happening I would have gone over there and got some pics. I’ll find...

    Ionic Plating Works

Hi Andrew, its been so long since I've been on this site, so apologies if you're reading this. Just wanted to say thanks for the very kind things you said about my dad in your piece. Your description of his temperament and outlook was very accurate and I can just imagine him taking a walk round...
