Stitcher, it is what is known as a Bellfast Roof and quite right there are no inside supports needed, the strength is in the roof being pushed down and outwards, the supporting walls have to be stopped from being pushed outwards. Quite common. A lot of arched bridges are constructed like that...

Barbinoz, If you go to google earth and search for Heath St South you will see a good image there, though it is now boarded up by the looks of it. Its on the corner of Dudley Rd/ Heath st south opposite Western Rd also opposite city hospital Terry
