    What is a pikelett

Seems it's only us and our antipodean cousins who have Pikeletes. We have a different definition of crumpet as well.

    1960s Car Insurance

Thanks Bob. It's just to fit in with a bit of historically based fiction I'm planning.

Who did you insure your vehicle with in the 1960s?

    Your Memories of SPAM

I found a ton of it today in my old Orange email account.

    Birmingham in 1970s

Thanks again, Mike. That would fit in better with my vague memories. If it was only a week or two it wouldn't have bothered me that much. It would seem linking our cells together we've got to it.

    Birmingham in 1970s

Thanks for the info Mike, even if it has left me more confused. I was living in Ireland in 1974 probably a good reason why it didn't affect me. Must be the old grey cells packing up cos I'm sure I recall something similar between '70 and '72, when electricity shortages lead my wife, who had...

    Birmingham in 1970s

I can only vaguely remember a national three day week being introduced in the early 1970s. As I worked in the manufacturing it must have affected me but for the life of me I can't remember how. Maybe if others could relay their experiences it might help. Thanks, P.

    Birmingham on Sea

Great pictures Mike, bringing back some great memories. The parents of a girl I worked with own a caravan in Brean so me and a mate used to rent it and take our then girlfriends, now wives down there for weekends. Not sure but I think I've spotted it. (See attached.) Strange how Norwegian...

    My wonderful bedroom

Worse than Chris and Les, I've never had my own room. Before marriage I shared with my brother and after with my wife (surprise that, eh?). Anyway, our bedroom window when I was growing up in Wellington Street overlooked the five small gardens of the yard, a greenhouse, two outside loos, an...

    Links: Maps Live site

Thanks Jennyann, It has its pros and cons compared with Google. In my view (not the bird's eye)lol the road mapping is a lot simpler and easy to use. Seems they must have taken a more recent picture of my house. My four year old car and recent kitchen extension are on it.

    chores

Another of my chores was to stand in the cellar to make sure the correct number of sacks were delivered and tipped through the cellar head. I'd come back up like I'd done an eight hour shift at t'pit.

    chores

Why do we cook peas? They taste so much nicer raw, straight from the pod. One of my chores was cleaning my grown up brother's shoes. He'd say "Polish 'em up and I might give you 3d." He never did; it was usually a tanner.

    Birmingham in 1970s

I have seen the film before but seeing it again makes me wonder what was so wrong with the place that we had to knock hell out of the city again! Thanks PaulE for reminding me of what we've lost.

    My Bmw Motorcar

Pete, The one I was thinking about was this with a big lump of an outboard turbocharger fitted in front of the grill (can't find a piccy of the actual one). You can see more of them at: https://tinyurl.com/2goecj

    Black Patch

Well, what can I add to that, gypsysue - what an interesting post? You're obviously far better informed than me. Yes, I can remember the Smiths who lived in and around Merry Hill. One family had a bungalow right on the edge of the park next to the Soho Tavern. If you've had a look...

    Black Patch

gypsysue, As a matter of interest, the Loveridges and other Romany defendants still lived around Black Patch park in Merry Hill, Smethwick, bordering Winson Green (NOT Handsworth), when I was a kid. The park got its name from the black patches left by the Romany camp fires.

    Ode to a Handsworth Lady

Beryl, I found John's poem photos quite easy to read. Are you clicking the image once it opens to make it bigger? Although I didn't have to use it in this instance, I also have a Zoom add-on to my Firefox browser, which enables me to increase the size of web images by up to 400%.
