    City Centre Photographs

Great pictures John. What's amazing is how random the compositions are, with no particular point of view. They make me wonder why they were taken. Were they taken with archiving the changing city in mind at the time? BTW, I'm a Winson Greener too - Wellington Street.

    Rod Birch

I too only heard the sad news from Sue Bonner yesterday. Although I knew him through the forum from its conception I only met Rod once. As said he was a relatively young man so it came as quite a shock. My thoughts and condolences go out to Brenda and the rest of the Birch family. May he rest...

I wonder if they had parking problems even then and they are traffic cones all along the gutter or are they parking places for handsome cabs or the equivalent of taxis.

It's views like this that remind me of some of the happiest times of my life. Keep 'em coming Stitch. Incidentally, I remember the frog-eyed Renault Dophine in that shot - a great cncept of four doors in such a small car but a right shed to drive. And, from recent experiences with Rrenault the...

    Items that have faded away

As far as I can remember, you've got it right, Stitcher. It was a tight-fitting grommet thingy with a lamp socket attached. There are instructions here... https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-Lamp-from-a-Bottle/

    Items that have faded away

]Bovril is still widely available and I had some only yesterday. I always had Oxo after a swim and not the silly new stuff in a tube, the good old cube variety that had to be crumbled into the hot water. I too have never sampled White Horse whisky and haven't seen Dimple Whisky for years but a...

From that photo it seems the people matched the city i being small. They look like Munchkins.

    Items that have faded away

Dunno if this is quite the right thread to ask but why don't we see white dog muck any more?

    City Centre Photographs

I can remember the old mine in the Fish Market. It was painted red and used, I think, to collect money for war-wounded seamen.

    Len Copsey R.I.P.

I too have only just caught up with this thread but would like to add my condolences to those of the other members. RIP Len.

    Why

So we've got no Rep Theatre and no Art Gallery - some second city, eh? :frog:

    Caravan Holidays

I think they did get the money back eventually and the caravan owner was done for fraud, but that didn't compensate for a lost holiday.

    BSA Bikes Birmingham

I remember a BSA test rider being killed outside Cannings, where I worked in the '60, when his bike collided with a truck that was pulling out of the loading bay in Gt Hampton Street.

    Caravan Holidays

I can remember one caravan holiday my parents booked only to get there only to find there was no caravan. No joke when you've paid the full whack and lugged three obnoxious kids and all the luggage by train and taxi from Brum to Devon. Here's a picture of Mom and me when we were luckier. Looking...

    Birmingham's Oldest Buildings.

Handsworth Old Town Hall, College Road, Handsworth Wood. Legend has it that Oliver Cromwell once stayed overnight here before the assault on Aston Hall. I very much doubt the story as he wasn't personally involved in that action but the building was there at the time and had been from 13th century.

    Children's Radio Programmes

According to Wikipedia you are correct Chris. It also describes the dramatic trauma he suffered in the trenches during WWI

The runaway train The old lady who swallowed a fly Tubby the Tuba... Coincidentally Uncle Mac got a mention on The Weakest Link last night and much to my surprise the, far younger than me (and I'm young), contestant got the question right.

    Traditional Brummie Food

Pressed ox tongue was my favourite along with sheep's brains on toast or soft roe.

    Handsworth

"A" marks where Hawthorn House is... The council's decision wasn't taken without a lot of pressure from local residents. We've had a campaign going for sometime to protect these historic buildings from developers. I would suggest that had the council gone ahead with the auction and Mr Singh...

    Thunder and Lightening !

Some time ago I read that Volkswagen had carried out test that proved being in a car is probably the safest place to be in a thunderstorm. I assume it's because you're insulated from the ground by rubber tyres filled with air. Unplugging TV and especially PC is probably a practical thing to...
