    What uniform could this be?

Cromwell. Many thanks for answering a quandary I have had for some time. Makes me very proud to know what a illustrious army group he fought with. My thanks again. Will.

    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Thanks Sylvia on the update. I only remember it all those years ago and it was a miserable, smelly, dank and rubbish strewn place then. If there was one thing that would get folks on the train and away from the coach, it was Digbeth coach station. A job done that was long overdue.

    Closing of Digbeth Coach Station

Have I missed a thread on this.? If they are closing Digbeth where are the long distance coaches operating from? Have been gone from Brum some thirty odd years and only knew of Digbeth.

    What uniform could this be?

This is a photograph of a uncle of mine taken during the second world war. Am told he died as a result of injuries received in operations. Can anyone identify, even from the shirt sleeve order, what unit he may have belonged to or possibly his medal ribbon. Tall order I know but live in hope.

Where is this 2007- 2008 queries

Worked for two years from that station in the late 50's. Would be marched out of the double gates in a line with officers dropping out of the line as they reached their beat areas. By the time the line had reached Icknield Street the sergeant had done his bit and the remainder simply went...

    Wisdom?

Forgive me Beryl if I steal a little of your thunder and glean a little of the reader's sympathy on the question of dental tortures though deviating from the wisdom part . Many years ago, as a young man I purchased a bag of roast chestnuts from the vender who plied his sales near to Lewis's...

Weather : past adverse weather in Birmingham

I recall one evening as a lad leaving the Odeon cinema in the city and joining a queue in Corporation Street for my bus home. Had to walk past the line to check the bus sign to ensure I was going to be joining the correct bus queue. One could barely make out the tall street lamps above and the...

    Do You Still Carry Scars

I should hold my head in shame in posting here for all I have are two scars to behold. The first on the right thumb where I fell and by luck found a broken bottle there waiting to break my fall. The second is an odd one. In my youth I can recall walking incorrectly whereby by right foot struck...

    National Service

I too used to return home at weekends. Well at first anyway until I found greater delights around my camp in Uxbridge, Middlesex and then it was far less frequent. Dennis I beat your letter by eleven months but after over fifty years I feel I was done a favour.; Will.

What has happened to our great statues ?

To add to the believed location of the original home of John Rogers I have an article written by a Robert K. Dent dated 30gth January, 1895 which appeared in publication of the Birmingham and Midland Institute, Archaelogical Section. It states: In the survey of the lordship of Birmingham made in...

The Collage and The Duke of Marlbrough Public House's

Bill Millington had Johnny Prescott training, at one time, in his ring above his pub. The pub was known locally, in the late 50's, when Bill had it - not by it's name but as "Spinghill Bills". His missus did the best jellied eels I have ever tasted and as I was led to believe Bill used to catch...

    Turner Brothers Toolmakers

Proper Brummie My sister worked for Turner Brothers from 1941 to 1946 in what was called the 'Progress Office' It was here she met her future husband who was a draughtsman. Apart from Turner's secretary she was one of the first women to be employed there. She recalls Frank Dutton who at the...

    Tiddly Moocher !

My interpretation of the words would be to the effect that - moocher - yes searching etc but I would class it as being nosey, prying into others business, and the tiddley to his size. Therefore: Small nosey b----r. - well that is my view of it. Will.

    Food

Remember condensed milk sandwiches? I still live with them. My good lady buys condensed milk solely she can make herself them. Now as a lad I would put sugar on my bread and butter (well margarine actually) but I grew out of it. My wife? It is still her treat to have those sandwiches -...

    Waggon & Horses Aston

Apologies for I know I digress but looking at the two photographs above I finally found that there was street lighting attached to the lower sections of the poles supporting the tram wires. What a measly light they would have emitted on the thoroughfare. Then look at those lights outside the...

    The Canadian War Memorial

Another, possibly little known, Canadian Memorial is situated in Newhaven, Sussex. Sixty five years ago on the 19th August, 1942 Operation Jubilee took place where 5,000 soldiers of the Canadian 2nd Division formed the major part of the ill fated raid on Dieppe. Of those numbers 3,369 were...

    Our childhood toys

The only cans I ever had were the ones with holes punched in them and a long wire handle to hold them with. One lit pieces wood and then put coal on top, in them. The next part was to swing them around to get the air pressure to make the coals burn. Great on a autumn/winter evening - kept...

    Birmingham Cinemas

Catkin. On reflection the tobaconist's shop was on the corner of Livery Street at Snow Hill. Beryl, Two male names I would add to any list would be that of Glenn Ford and odd maybe but that of Jack Palance. The latter always personified evil, with his jutting neck veins, in a lot of his roles
