searching for the WW1 battalion using only name service number and regiment

Brilliant. Only problem is that the 1/6th RWR left for France in 1915 and presumably survivors received the Cross with the other two medals, whereas Alfred didn't. One option that I can think of is that he might have been transferred into 1/6th during 1916? The other Alfred George was my uncle...

searching for the WW1 battalion using only name service number and regiment

Thanks Colin Doesn't the War & Victory Medals awards mean that he served in a theatre of war? In 1906 he was in Alcester Street. After that he lived in Mary Street, Highgate Street and Wrentham Street, but I'm not sure of the dates for these last three addresses Regards Peter

Corner Shop Grange Road, Small Heath

Re: Grange Road Hello Jackie. I used to live directly opposite that shop in the 1960's. It was run by a family called Brown as a grocery business. The daughter of the owner was Polly Brown from the 60's group Pickety Witch. There is an excellent site about the area, especially Grange road, on...

If you walked down Grange Road towards the cinema, the shop was on Grange Road on the RHS at the junction with Coventry Road Regards Pete

    Grange Road Small Heath

In the late 50's, early 60's, I lived in Grange road opposite Bertram road, at the other end of the block of terraced houses from the Nelson pub. We had an outside toilet in the yard that was shared with our next door neighbours. We were also lucky to have a "brew house" where Mum did the...

    Thorp Street Barracks - (H)ostlers

Does anyone have any information regarding Hoslers or Ostlers at Thorp Street? My grandfather was recruited as such during WW1, serving in France Belgium & Italy. He would visit the Barracks right up until the 1940's, perhaps in the TA?:)

    Baker

Hello Karina My Great grandfather was William Baker. Born 1839, (I think he was married to Mary Matthews, who died before 1891)). He was a boatman during the 1880's, involved in coal deliveries. His daughter, Maria was my grandmother, and his son Alfred was shipped to Canada in 1894 (aged 11)...

    Baker family canal bargees

My great grandfather, William Baker, was a bargee around Saltley during the 1870's/80's. He was known to be off work during the 1890's due to a "Coal strike". I have not been able to find him on census returns for 1851/61/71/81. Is there a link anywhere for census returns for bargees in...
