I well remember taking 20 Senior Service with me when I went off to start Basic Training, they lasted me 3 weeks, we never got much time for smoking, any time not rushing about, we spent either eating or sleeping. Happy days.

In the days when there was a soap powder named "Omo" there was an urban myth in the army, that the wives in the married quarters, who were "playing away" would put the soap powder in the kitchen window to alert their lover. It was supposed to mean "Old Man Out" Naughty or what. Barrie

    Which regiment?

I found the death reference for him, and it gives his date of birth as 1 Aprl 1901. If this is the case, he would have been about 13 when WWI started, and would have been 17 when it ended, so unless he lied about his age, as many men did, he wouldn't have been in the army, an you clarify this...

    military abbreviations

Have to agree with Suzanne. I know of one man who served with 7 different regiments and had 7 different regimental numbers, so it was quite common. Could you give a name so that we could have a look for his medal card, that may give a clue. Barrie.

14th Bn, Royal Warks Regt (1st Birmingham Bn) - service of Pte Joseph W Marsden

Yes of course it can be found at this link https://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org/ It is a subscription site, but is very reasonable. The absent Voters List gives name and address and in addition gives the regimental number, rank, and branch of service. I find it very useful myself. Barrie

1/277 New John Street West - photos taken about 1911

On the 1912 Electoral Roll there is a Harry Reed. He is at Hse 1 Court 38 New John St West. This could possibly be 1/277 that you were looking for. The Electoral Roll does not give trades I'm afraid. Barrie.
