    Bull Ring 1930s - 1950s

Regarding the Midland Red terminal at St Martin's in the Bull Ring. Prior to 1930 my father Fred Eborn was employed as Chauffeur/Butler by a family in Solihull and lived on the premises (shades of Up Stairs, Down Stairs !). One Sunday on his half day off he travelled into Brum and took The...

    Tillingham Street Birmingham 11

Thanks again Mike, That imfo has kind of made my day. I was beginning to doubt my memory (again!) as at one time I used to work for a finance company and the biggest part was knocking on doors to chase overdue accounts. Whilst it had it's downside the pay and perks were good. The first bit was...

    Courtyards and yards of brum

One of my aunties lived in a cottage that had a big wooden seat with two holes. One was normal size and the other was much smaller and I presume was for children. This would have been handy for toilet training and I can't help but think there was a variation on the old saying "Those that pray...

    Handsworth Technical School

Hi Neville, They did take a school photo, on clockwork timed camera, took a photo in about 5 minutes that came out about 2 foot wide.Think it was only of the Boulton Rd mob. If I had a copy must have left it with all my other stuff when I came to Oz in 1961. Cheers Tim

Hi Neville, a couple of queries spring to mind , did Tillingham St have a different house numbering system to what I always thought as the norm Odds one side and Evens on tuther ? Is the 1939 Register you refer to "on line" and what is it actually as I'm not familiar with it (not unusual with...

    Handsworth Technical School

Hi Neville, Thanks for the catch up. Can't think of anything clever to add. I presume that you must have gone direct from Stratford Rd School to HTS and into the engineering as I can't recall our paths crossing. I only did the two year building course which didn't set up with a career, not being...

    Memories of the Avro Lancaster

Gee you forget how big some of the factories were. Also how noisy they were until you became accustomed to them.

Regarding the bird, seem to remember my paternal grandmother was said to have had a magpie as a pet caged bird in Brill ,Buckinghamshire. A neighbor out here in Oz had an aunt that also had a magpie that was a good talker so maybe ! Cheers Tim

    Heaton Street Hockley

I had a paper round and some of the gardens in the back to backs were little jewels and a credit to the people that tended them. One I recall had a small pool that was home to a couple of terrapins and another was edged with beautiful porcelain beer engine pull handles all different colours , a...

A lovely picture bringing back great memories. Always look to see if I'm in a picture like this if the date seems right. What a shame that this kind of traditional market is killed off in the name of progress. Cheers Tim.

Tims Drapers Key Hill. Hockley, 1950's.

The price of 4.1/2d was a common price when I was a kid. I seem to remember that a loaf of Hawley's bread (with Crust on that I picked on the way home from Aldworth's shop in Turner St.) cost that much as did a bottle of Mason's lemonade if you returned an empty bottle at the Ansell's Off...

Brum traffic images from 1960s onwards ?

Strange how the pictures on this site don't equate to the memories I have of the fun times spent in the traffic of Brum.

    Snow Hill (the Road)

Thanks Lyn and Mohawk for memory pics. Used to be able to look down and see into Wimpy's from the bus coming home from Handsworth Tech ( if my failing memory serves me well?). Met up a few times with mates at the Kardomah and cut thro Gt Western Arcade to get bus from Bull St 37 or 44. Had a...
