Victoria Road Aston Manor - Kent Regiment - Chamberlain Celebrations July 1906

Ian, I have just seen your post. I can't throw any light on the PC, but my headmistress at Canterbury Road School was Miss Baggs. I bet they are connected. Coincidentally the school was built in 1906.

    addmission to Aston Hall

Hi Jean, I don't know where the Turtle shell went to. The people in there just seem to know about the room they are standing in, so no one to ask about things that were once a part of the house. I remembered the kitchens more than any other room. I think there were more copper pans than there...

    addmission to Aston Hall

It's not as friendly as I remeber it, it is very much stand back and don't touch anything. The wooden chairs have string tied across the seats to stop anyone sitting on them. The lad in the hall who was there to greet people looked horrified when my sister told him she used to play on the front...

    Brides through the years.

What a lovely post this is, thought I'd bring it to the top again. First one is our wedding at Aston Church 1957. The other two are my parent's wedding Hamstead Church 1934

    Bevington Road Aston

There were never any tramtracks in any of the roads running from Witton Road to Trinity Road. The tram looks to be on an incline, so I don't think it's Witton Lane either. Peter would have known.

    Handsworth - Leonard Road

Thank you Ian for the photo's, I have been trying to recall the name of the road for ages. My parents lived in 'rooms' in the 1930's first in Wilson Road PB and then when I was born they moved to Leonard Road. I assume it is behind Birchfield Road, not a stones throw from Handsworth Wood.

    Coming Up for Air

Hi Mike, nice to see you posting again. Dyas Avenue is in Hamstead, Birmingham 22. It runs from Old Walsall Road, towards Tower Hill. It is a right turn after the canal bridge that spans Old Walsall Road. My great Uncle Jo Worrall was a theatrical agent in Lozells, in my mother's words 'He...

    Peter walker.

This post caught my eye tonight and as I often think of Peter I read all the lovely tributes to him again. We should, as Jim has said, always remember Peter and the huge contribution he made to the history of Birmingham with his postings on BHF.

    Holidays of the past

Yes it was a bit of a shock Jean, I have heard that it is looking better in Hastings now. It is suddenly the place to live. David Looking at your old post with the Four Oaks card showing their terms, I smiled when I saw that meal times were on the dot. So different to today wasn't it.

    St John Street, birmingham

I have attached a part of the map, maybe it will give you something to go on. It is possible that John Street became St John Street, I will look to see if a later map answers the question. Double click to see a bigger view.

    St John Street, birmingham

William Westley was a Birmingham surveyor. He owned land between Dale End and Steelhouse Lane. On this map 'Westley's Row' runs west from John Street. It appears on Bradford's map of 1751 as Westley Street, but by 1781 had been renamed as London Prentice Street. This is the description of...

    peaky blinders book

Yes Wendy, I agree about being judgemental. Who knows what we would have done given their circumstances. Which is why I feel better if my ancestor stole rather than hurt another person.
