    Old street pics..

I know my dear mum never called the waste bins Dustbins. She always called them "Ashbins", as it was where the ash from the fires were put.

    Old street pics..

My mum always told me & my brothers the clean the Suff outside, meaning the drain. Where the word comes from is a mystery. Maybe it is to do with the pipework. Never heard the word Miskins though. This is a new one.

    Park Lane...Aston

Hello Brummie-Lad. From what I remember, those toilets smelt really bad. It was late 1060's when we left Potters Lane to move to Bracebridge Street, which was due to the houses being demolished. I loved this house, though my parents were not too keen.

    Park Lane...Aston

I used to live in Potters Lane when I was little. My old house was where the woman & child are, right where the gritting bin is. It was next door to the chippy.

    Lewis's Department Store

Susan. You are totally right. It is so nice to share stories & keep the memories going, even though some can be painful. I for one have share memories from my early life in & around Birmingham, & have felt some were painful, but sharing these memories help future generations understand what it...

    Bracebridge Street

Hello Anne. I see you mention Geoffrey Birch. Did he have a daughter named Anne. I was at Elkington Street school with her, & seem to vaguely remember her telling me about her dad, though it was a long, long time ago.

    Bracebridge Street

Hello Susan. I bet you are like me (good at faces but no good at names). Here is a photo of my dad, though it was taken way after Enots, he had not changed much. I do remember him coming home one night quite unexpectedly wearing his white overalls, & scaring me & my mum.

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Barr Beacon. I too remember it as The Daddy Long Legs club. Spent many friday & saturday nights there. Never went there when it was The Dolls Club. I always use to sit in a dark corner all night.

    Bracebridge Street

Yes, Susan. Mr Ryder was his forman. I seem to remember my dad mentioning him, & me being only young asked my dad if he rides a bike. I got told off for this though. The younger generation just do not understand what it was really like in those days. But at least we were happy in our own sweet...

    Bracebridge Street

Hello Susan. I know my dad worked in the Brass shop, making the Brass buttons. His name was Arthur Wicks, though I do remember him sometimes doing the night shifts. Even though Aston has changed (for the worst, some would say), at least we still have the fond memories. They were hard times, but...

    Bracebridge Street

Hello Susan. My dad used to work at Benton & Stones in the 1960's. They always looked after the workers, especially at Christmas, when everyone was invited to the Christmas party. I can remember him taking me & 2 of my brothers to one of the parties. Had our photo taken before we went in. Still...

    Then & Now

Thank you for sharing this brilliant poem. This is exactly how I remember growing up in Aston. What a pity we could not have those days right now. Life was so simple, but enjoyable. Us kids never needed much to keep us happy. Give us a ball, a few bits of string or rope, & we was happy...

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

I vaguely remember Mr Clarke. Maybe my 2 youngest brothers at the time would remember more as they both went to Aston Hall Road School when we lived in Waterworks Street.

Totally agree Raz. Hopefully, one day, this will all be stopped, once & for all. x

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

I never spent much time at UTS due to the bullying (head put down the toilets & tied to the long poles in the playground & having medicine balls thrown at me. Mr (nobby) Parker threatened to give me the cane because I mentioned it to him. It was my worst school experience.

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

I remember Mr Parker very well, though did not like his discipline methods. He threatened to give me the cane for telling him of the bullying I had received from some of the older boys.

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

The West End was the best, especially with the floating dance floor. My dad helped demolish it. I remember him taking me there to show me what was being done.

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I went there a few times when I turned 18, but was called the daddy long legs then.

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

I too went to UTS & hated it. I left in 1965. Hated the bullying & some of the teachers. Mr Parker was not a very understanding head master either. I can remember going to him about the bullying, & he threatened to give me the cane. I was so glad to be out of that school. Only had 2 classes that...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

I have heard it said many times when I was at Hunters Hill that Miss Urquhart was not very nice to the girls at Cropwood. Luckily, I never met her.
