Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

I would certainly love to give some insight of times in these open air scools. I had 4 years at Hunters Hill before I left to start work. Some of the teachers were really nice, yet there were a few that took it upon themselves to bully the weeker children, (myself included). It will be so nice to...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Jano.I was at Hunters Hill, just across the road from Cropwood, & had a similar experience when I first went ther in 1965. I ran away twice, as I did not like it, but after sitting down for a proper chat with our head teacher, (Miss Buckley), I started to like it, though got bullied a lot.

    Lewis's Department Store

I totally agree oldmohawk. These new lifts just do not give us the same experience. I miss those days of how things used to be, like the sound of the lifts gates rattling, the views, & the wooden escalators. They had their own quirks, which we loved. We need to bring them back.

    Lewis's Department Store

I used to love the sound the gates made on the lifts. Just can not get that any more with the newer versions.

    Then & Now

Totally agree. Prince Charles once called the old Bullring a concrete jungle. Now it definitely is with glass panels thrown in for good measure. I very much prefer the old Bullring in the top picture, with a few trees & greenery. This so-called modernization of our once beautiful city is taking...

Wow. What a fantastic photo Lyn. I had heard of Baskerville House but did not know where it was or had ever seen it until now. Thank you so much for sharing this. Having just read up about John Baskerville. You are correct Lyn. There is no mention of him being murdered. He died at the age of 69...

Thank you Chris. Will certainly be trying to obtain a copy, as I am a former pupil of HHOAS.

    Old street pics..

Totally agree Lyn. This was my favorite cinema. I was told that it was the first with a curved screen. The Gaumont Cinema should have been saved. Definitely would not have likedto have been one of those photographers. Lol

I remember my mum taking me to the Gaumont Cinema to see "The Sound of Music". must have seen it a few thousand times over the years.

    Then & Now

I know there was a st michael's church somewhere near by, but after so many years away from the area, I have forgotten where. 38 mph was quite quick in those day Gerry.

    Then & Now

I know the feeling Gerry. I used to live in Villa Street, next door to the cafe on the corner of Villa Street & Nursery Road. The area was so much better then, compared to now. If my memory serves me well, wasn't the church St Michael's.

    Park Lane...Aston

Will check your school thread Ann. Miss Rock was so warm & kind. My father went to Burlington Street as did 2 of my brothers too. It was such a special school to start at.

    Park Lane...Aston

I too went to Burlington Street Ann. This was around 1958ish. Miss Rock was my favorite teacher. I remember my mum taking me for my first day, & I cried, but miss Rock looked after me, & I remember her taking the whole class to Billy Smarts Circus.

    The daddy long legs club

Welcome to the forum Tom. I remember the Daddy Long Legs club. I used to go in there every Friday & Saturday. From what I remember, it was a very dark & dank little place. I used to get my drink & sit in one of the very dark corners (which there were many). Luckily, I was only 17 when it was the...

Hello John. Sorry I have not phoned you as yet. I have had a few problems with internet & lost your number. It will be great to have a catch up after all these years. Hope you are keeping well.

    Park Lane...Aston

That seems more feasible than what I discovered.

    Park Lane...Aston

Apparently, all the houses for the working class were very poor quality & a bill was passed around 1875 that these type of house should not be built, & better quality home should. Apparently, some had bathrooms, which is probably where the name gold mines came from.

    Park Lane...Aston

Just tried to find out on Google, & it appears that it was a name given to better quality homes than what people were used to.

    Park Lane...Aston

I have never heard that before. Thank you Brummy-lad for mentioning this. Hopefully, someone can give us some insight to this.
