    Lewis's Department Store

That is just how I remember the old Lewis's store, though it was in the late 60's that I started going there with my mum. Such a wonderful store, which is sadly missed. The staff were always so friendly & helpful, no matter what age you were.Just do not find that much these days.

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Yes tt300. There was an aweful lot of bullying, though some came from teachers like the woodworking teacher, Mr Tebbitt. He used to pick on me quite often when using a saw. I think it made me a stronger person today, so can be thankful of that. My happiest memories was spending time in Miss...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello tt300. I remember the film nights that Mr Pinner organised. Sadly, I missed out on any trips. I would have enjoyed them. Yes, I remember Mr Powell's daughter & his son too. Such a lovely family, & so sad to hear she & her husband had pssed away at such a young age. Mr Powell & his son...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Good morning tt300. Some of the pupils at HHOAS had horrible nicknames for some of the teachers, though I always respected them. I liked Mr Pinner. He helped me a lot in Geography, as I was struggling at times. I never knew he was a refugee. Another who was given a horrible nickname was Mr...

    fish and chip shops

We lived next door, one up from the chippy. I can remember my dad throwing some plastic train track on the fire, & our chimney caught fire. Our Chimney pot was knocked of the top, right through the roof of the chippy & into the shop.Luckily, no-one was in there at the time. We got on so well...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Welcome to the forum tt300. Mr Pinner was a funny teacher to look at. One thing I never understood wa, Why did he get the nickname "Plug" from some of the pupils in his class. I have often thought about this, even though I left in 1969.

I used to live next door to that chippy in potters hill Mick 710. They were a lovely family, from what I remember.

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello Joe. You was at HHOAS when I was there, though do not remember anyone named Joe. It has been many years since I left & have forgotten many of the pupils from my time at HHOAS. I can remember the feeling of going home at holiday time & everyone in their normal clothes & feeling strange, as...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

I remember the ultraviolet clinic Peter. When I was at HHOAS, we used to have some of the girls come over from Cropwood for dance nights & film nights. I think this was the boys who were over the age of 13, though may b wrong. I was at HHOPAS from 1965 to 1969, when I left school I too left...

Hello Peter. You was HHOAS when I was there then, though do not remember you. I went there in 1965 & left in 69. I was one of the many who ran away when I first got there, but after spending time with Miss Buckley in her little office, I began to love it. I remember the dance nights & the film...

My parents used to go in the Vine Lynn. So lovely to see a lovely photo sowing just how Villa Street was when I lived there.

    Villa Street Lozells

Thank you for posting this photograph Brummy-Lad. By moving the photo upwards & to the right, my old house is visible in the bottom left hand corner (next to the cafe on the corner). It has been many years since I last saw the houses like this & has taken me back.

Hi Tina. I always thought they were always combined when I was there in the 60's. Maybe it was, but in a different way.

Blackwell was a really wonderful & peaceful village. (not sure of what is like now as I have not been back since 1969). I used to love going into Bromsgrove almost every saturday, when I was at HHOAS. People were so warm & friendly.

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

I was there & remember the punishment that was handed out, but to the wrong pupils. When I first went there, I was constantly bullied, & when I went to Mr Parker about it, he told me to go away or have the cane. I left there in 1965 to go to an Open Air School. I was so glad to be away from that...

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello Joe. Probably the reason why you do not recall me was because I found it hard to mix, (kept myself to myself), until I moved from the dorm upto the block. I think Mr Browsword & Miss Buckley had someting to do with me not being so quiet then. I can remamber Mr Powell's residence being...

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

Hello Aston lad. When was you at Burlington Street School ? I was there too, (started there around 1958ish). I can always remember my favourite teacher (Miss Rock). Such a lovely teacher who certainly knew how to look after her pupils.

Birmingham Open Air Schools - Cropwood, Hunter's Hill, Marsh Hill and Skilts (excl. Haseley Hall and Uffculme)

Hello Betty. Upon seeing that you were at Cropwood from 1965-1967, I was wondering if you ever came over the Hunters Hill school with other girls for our regular film nights & dance nights, which were held in our gymnasium. Though I never took part in any of the dances (too scared of the girls)...

Hello Jane. Thank you for your email regarding your research. Yes, I would be willing to share my experiences of my 4 years at Hunters Hill Open Air School. Sadly, the only people who know of what life was really like are the former pupils of these schools. Times was very hard for us pupils in...
